[9:11] You: Sure!
[9:11] You: Not at all, Scot! Prolly enjoy them! :)
[9:12] Scot Jung: Let my inspiration flow in token lines suggesting rhythm that will not forsake me till my tale is told and done

[9:16] You: Very diplomatic of you!
[9:16] Wrenaissance Jewell: just give us back our quarterback :)
[9:16] Joop Zuhal: Scot and I met a bit longer than a year ago in SL, and became friends soon
[9:16] You: lol
[9:16] Joop Zuhal: we r two of a kind i think
[9:16] Scot Jung: we are
[9:17] You: :) friends forever
[9:17] Scot Jung: hendrix fans
[9:17] Scot Jung: together
[9:17] Joop Zuhal: scot and i discussed together with edtek xeno the added value of sl for learning and teaching
[9:17] Wrenaissance Jewell: I get asked about that a lot
[9:17] Joop Zuhal: we all work on different projects but share ideas and experience

Project Background & Methodology (Dodge Power Score)

[9:18] Joop Zuhal: my project is a research project funded by the DfE in the Netherlands
[9:18] Scot Jung: we used the bernie dodge equation for power of learning to begin the investigation
[9:18] Scot Jung: p n= ade
[9:18] Scot Jung: power of learning
[9:18] Scot Jung: is attention times
[9:18] Scot Jung: depth
[9:18] Joop Zuhal: It s purpose is to investigate peoples perceptions about sl as a tool for education
[9:18] Scot Jung: times efficiency
[9:19] Scot Jung: joops method was to use snowball sampling of experts
[9:19] Joop Zuhal: as scot says, we used the Bernie Dodge Power Score
[9:19] Scot Jung: to interview 50
[9:19] Scot Jung: educators
[9:19] Scot Jung: scholars
[9:19] Scot Jung: and creative types
[9:19] Scot Jung: using the dodge equation as the framework
[9:19] Scot Jung: all perceptions of interviewees
[9:20] Joop Zuhal: This delivered 250 pages of script which i am investigating now, the qquotes are labelled for kwantitive results
[9:20] You: WOW!
[9:20] You: a lot of work
[9:20] Scot Jung: joop is a workhorse
[9:20] Joop Zuhal: well, a data analyst did that :-)
[9:20] You: :)
[9:21] Joop Zuhal: before this data analysis i selected remarkable quotes from the texts and put them into headlines, you see them all around you
[9:21] Scot Jung: and a word on the method
[9:21] Scot Jung: interviews all done in sl
[9:21] Scot Jung: using existing sl methods and tools
[9:21] You: what were those?
[9:21] Scot Jung: f2f sl interviews
[9:21] Joop Zuhal: it was my first conclusion, meant to support ongoing discussion and the preps of a miniconference held here last week
[9:22] Scot Jung: circle back around and descdribe your process a bit Joop
[9:22] Memetic Projects: interesting.
[9:22] Scot Jung: Ed and I did some pilotiong of the method and process with Joop
[9:22] Joop Zuhal: I took 50 interviews in world with avatars, we sat down and worked down an interview protocol
[9:23] Joop Zuhal: during the session i handed over notecards with the 3 questions derived from the bernie dodge equation
[9:23] Memetic Projects: do you have a reference URL for the Bernie Dodge materials?
[9:24] Scot Jung: yes we can get that
[9:24] Scot Jung: but
[9:24] Joop Zuhal: the scored sl using the variables, then they were asked to elaborate on the reasoning behind their answers
[9:24] Scot Jung: bernie himslef
[9:24] Scot Jung: admits that joop has done more than bernine as with it
[9:24] Joop Zuhal: the url is on my blog, search for bernie dodge
[9:24] Memetic Projects: neat :)
[9:24] Joop Zuhal: well yes and i know now how to operationalise it more specific, :-)
[9:24] Joop Zuhal: he doesnt LOL
[9:24] Scot Jung: right
[9:25] You: Thanks!
[9:25] Scot Jung: he has moved on to other projects

Outcomes & Lessons Learned

[9:25] Joop Zuhal: the elaboration on the scores was the real wanted result on this project, the score is interesting but dodgy :-)
[9:25] Joop Zuhal: i ll explain later in my blog
[9:26] Scot Jung: actually more a judgement
[9:26] Scot Jung: than an accurate measurement
[9:26] Scot Jung: but in my mind
[9:26] Scot Jung: the variables test true
[9:26] Joop Zuhal: in phase 2 we grouped our outcomes using the Community of Inquiry model of Garrison and Anderson
[9:26] Scot Jung: in a quantitative sense
[9:26] Scot Jung: due to the consistency of response
[9:27] Joop Zuhal: Scot maybe you can say more how you integrated the results and the COI model in your work
[9:27] You: what a team - you guys tag-team very well!
[9:27] Scot Jung: http://aggiornamento-ii.blogspot.com/
[9:27] Joop Zuhal: We hope to meet f2f real soon
[9:27] Scot Jung: ok
[9:27] Scot Jung: can do so
[9:27] Scot Jung: url is joops blog
[9:28] You: yes - was sent to group in blog entry
[9:28] Scot Jung: and very nice overview of promising sites and practices thoughout
[9:28] Scot Jung: k
[9:28] Joop Zuhal: thanks partner
[9:28] Scot Jung: I am preparing a seminar in our doc program
[9:28] Scot Jung: in the school of education
[9:28] Scot Jung: for teachers and administators
[9:28] Scot Jung: the seminar will be taught in sl
[9:28] Scot Jung: and about sl
[9:28] Memetic Projects: ohhhh
[9:29] You: cool!
[9:29] You: I look forward to hearing more about that
[9:29] Scot Jung: several principles that we elarned from Joops work
[9:29] Scot Jung: that will be in play
[9:29] Scot Jung: 1. a boot camp experience for new residents is vital
[9:29] Scot Jung: i am a quaker
[9:29] Scot Jung: so boot camp may seem strange
[9:29] Scot Jung: idea
[9:29] Scot Jung: but
[9:29] Scot Jung: new residents need to learn how to walk and talk and move and feel in sl
[9:30] Memetic Projects: yup
[9:30] Scot Jung: before they can think and interact
[9:30] Scot Jung: and be a citizen
[9:30] Scot Jung: and learn content that we desire
[9:30] Joop Zuhal: it is also important to make them think who they are and what they want ot look like
[9:30] Scot Jung: 2. strong instructional design is needed
[9:30] Joop Zuhal: and this is not just for fun
[9:30] Scot Jung: yes, Joops
[9:30] Scot Jung: that is part of 1 for sure
[9:31] Scot Jung: I am somewhat of a contructivisit and am not big fan of direct instruction
[9:31] Scot Jung: however
[9:31] Scot Jung: i want a stong design
[9:31] Scot Jung: like a road map so that students know what the objectives are and several toues to get there
[9:31] Scot Jung: 3.
[9:31] Memetic Projects: the guide on the side :)
[9:31] Scot Jung: one of the really powerful aspects of sl is the "presence"
[9:31] Scot Jung: the being there
[9:32] Joop Zuhal: Whatever direction you take, think it through all the way and make sure there is enough scaffolding for your students and teachers
[9:32] Scot Jung: that gives us power to overcome the sense of apartness that comes in text based distance ed
[9:32] Scot Jung: and with this presence comes emotional connections
[9:33] Scot Jung: the affective domain is powerful in play here
[9:33] Scot Jung: and we can take full advantage of that in sl
[9:33] Scot Jung: the coi model that Joop is using
[9:34] Joop Zuhal: We have little knowledge on the added value of this 3d environment yet
[9:34] Scot Jung: is a very good model for examining elements that are really needed
[9:34] Scot Jung: to have a successful experience for learner
[9:34] Scot Jung: now
[9:34] Scot Jung: all my students are mid level professionals and middle aged
[9:34] Joop Zuhal: but the perception of many is that it is a strong aspect of the quality of interaction
[9:34] Scot Jung: i want to get them to the point of "suspension of disbelief"
[9:34] Scot Jung: so that they are here
[9:35] Scot Jung: and can relax and enjoy the experience
[9:35] Scot Jung: and forging real relationships of trust and meaning with others
[9:35] Scot Jung: and therefore 4.
[9:35] You: and that can be uphill
[9:35] Scot Jung: the primary content
[9:35] Scot Jung: yes indeed
[9:35] Scot Jung: for my students especially
[9:35] Scot Jung: the content of my seminar will be communities in sl
[9:35] Scot Jung: and we will help them join communities
[9:35] Scot Jung: as a participant observer
[9:36] Scot Jung: and not just educational groups
[9:36] Scot Jung: or even their first choice
[9:36] Joop Zuhal: In what way will you let them report to you?
[9:36] Scot Jung: i will let each person choose one from a list and i will assign one
[9:36] Scot Jung: we will have weekly gatherings for informal exhchange like this
[9:36] Wrenaissance Jewell: so you are intentionally moving them outside their comfort zone?
[9:36] Scot Jung: and then use a wiki for building a joint paper
[9:37] Scot Jung: right
[9:37] You: YAY!!!
[9:37] You: great!
[9:37] Scot Jung: i will requiree that some of the students join social groups
[9:37] Scot Jung: cross cultural groups
[9:37] Joop Zuhal: We must mention ellie brewsters' work her, women studies in chicago
[9:37] Scot Jung: and of course this gives me a legitimate reason to hang with the surfers
[9:37] Scot Jung: and the deadheads
[9:37] You: ;)
[9:37] Scot Jung: and the club folks
[9:37] Memetic Projects: lol
[9:37] Scot Jung: and jazz musicians and all the rest who i love
[9:38] Wrenaissance Jewell: love this job :)
[9:38] Scot Jung: !!!
[9:38] Scot Jung: amen to that
[9:38] Scot Jung: Joop, take it
[9:38] Joop Zuhal: Ok,
[9:38] Scot Jung: u were going to tell of ellie
[9:39] Joop Zuhal: Looking at the first results of the scripts i see many of the headlines behind you confirmed in the data, some are not
[9:39] You: that's intellagirl?
[9:39] Scot Jung: no
[9:39] You: thx!
[9:39] You: Ellie Brewster works in what area?
[9:39] Joop Zuhal: but Ellie Brewster I wrote about her in my blog
[9:39] You: ok, will chk
[9:39] Scot Jung: gender studies ohio state
[9:39] Scot Jung: go buckeyes!
[9:39] Joop Zuhal: Ohio!
[9:39] Scot Jung: yeah
[9:39] You: Yay :)
[9:40] Joop Zuhal: I will deliver my report in a week to the ministry, i ll make a summary in english and put it on the blog, for you to read

Question/Answer Period

[9:40] Joop Zuhal: Any questions?
[9:40] Scot Jung: Come hear Uncle John's Band playing to the tide Come on along or go alone he's come to take his children home
[9:41] Memetic Projects: awesome
[9:41] Scot Jung: oops, sorry Joop
[9:41] Joop Zuhal: Scot have you been drinking ginger beer again
[9:41] You: lol
[9:41] Scot Jung: :-)
[9:41] Joop Zuhal: I repeat, any questions in the crowd?
[9:41] Scot Jung: yes.
[9:41] Scot Jung: i have a qusstion]
[9:41] You: This is AMAZING!
[9:42] Scot Jung: but will wait for others
[9:42] Memetic Projects: sounds like fascinating work, I'm interested in reading the report whne it hits your blog :)
[9:42] You: Please go ahead
[9:42] Scot Jung: I am planning a trip to visit Joop in the NL
[9:42] Scot Jung: in early June
[9:42] You: Could you talk about getting through the IRB process
[9:42] Memetic Projects: hehe
[9:42] Scot Jung: maybe by that time
[9:42] You: especially with multiple insitutions involved
[9:43] Scot Jung: we could meet with u again
[9:43] Scot Jung: and have follow up
[9:43] You: that would be great!
[9:43] Memetic Projects: indeed.
[9:43] Scot Jung: as ara as IRB
[9:43] You: We'd love to have you come back when there are more people
[9:43] Scot Jung: at my instituion
[9:43] Scot Jung: we are under the radar
[9:43] Scot Jung: and i think that Joop is getting his work blessed through the national ministry of education
[9:43] Scot Jung: as the work grows
[9:43] Joop Zuhal: I did not go through an IRB procedure, as this was not research done by an research unit of a university or college
[9:44] Scot Jung: i will be accountable to the university here
[9:44] You: Scot, how is this under the radar? Would n't it come as human subjects?
[9:44] Scot Jung: but am getting good support
[9:44] Scot Jung: well
[9:44] Scot Jung: as of yet
[9:44] Scot Jung: i am doing action research only
[9:44] Scot Jung: on my own practice
[9:44] Memetic Projects: yay action research
[9:44] Scot Jung: second
[9:44] Scot Jung: this is joops project
[9:44] Scot Jung: i am third author at best
[9:44] You: oh
[9:44] You: wish I was so lucky
[9:45] Scot Jung: ar our IHE we have a human subjects review
[9:45] Joop Zuhal: Thank you for these nice words :-))
[9:45] You: Do you know anyone who has goen through IRB for SL research?
[9:45] Scot Jung: but not as demanding as IRB at a research one
[9:45] Scot Jung: like yours
[9:45] You: yes :)
[9:45] Joop Zuhal: I do not know, i see many items in the SLRL list but that s it
[9:45] Scot Jung: i think that we can help with that
[9:45] Scot Jung: start with Imper Fegte, Lexi
[9:45] You: Could you talk a bit more about the pros and cons of SL education? YOur research findings
[9:45] Scot Jung: your colleague here on CI
[9:46] You: THanks, Scot!
[9:46] Scot Jung: Ellie Brewster
[9:46] You: Imper lives across the street - see him all the time
[9:46] Joop Zuhal: I can bring in the headlines
[9:46] Scot Jung: and intellagirl
[9:46] Joop Zuhal: do you want me to?
[9:46] You: Great!
[9:46] Scot Jung: and Joanna Trailblazer
[9:46] You: This is a lot of help!
[9:46] Scot Jung: Joop
[9:46] Joop Zuhal: yes
[9:46] Scot Jung: you could put out a call on your list
[9:46] You: Joop, when I asked on SRLR, you were pretty much the only response
[9:46] Scot Jung: to those who could address the IRB concern
[9:47] You: Yes - these names will be great help
[9:47] You: Any one else have questions?
[9:47] You: Joop, you said you had a notecard about pros and cons?
[9:47] Joop Zuhal: Ok, we can try to find out, allthough i am not familiar with this issue
[9:47] Joop Zuhal: i will show it now
[9:47] You: thanks!
[9:47] Scot Jung: could be posted on the sled list as well
[9:47] Scot Jung: are any of u on sled?
[9:47] You: yes - please!
[9:47] You: I am
[9:48] Scot Jung: ask on sled
[9:48] Joop Zuhal gave you SL pros.
[9:48] Scot Jung: about irb
[9:48] Scot Jung: u should get some good responses
[9:48] You: I thought the research list would be good, but didn't generate much discussion
[9:48] You: I will try SLED
[9:48] Joop Zuhal gave you SL cons.
[9:49] Scot Jung: Joop
[9:49] Scot Jung: these cards are well done
[9:49] Memetic Projects: SLED is a bit overwhelming with the volume it generates
[9:49] Scot Jung: i will tell u one of the biggest cons that i see
[9:49] Scot Jung: true on sled
[9:49] You: yes, please :)
[9:49] Scot Jung: i created a separate email just to handle it
[9:49] Scot Jung: major con
[9:49] Scot Jung: for sl
[9:50] Scot Jung: involves pedagogical phiosophy
[9:50] Scot Jung: since the environment allows for easy distraction
[9:50] Scot Jung: and has lots of tempting people and places
[9:50] You: Do you mind if I post a slide of this to our wiki or flickr?
[9:50] Scot Jung: the teacher must take into account that trying to control the environment
[9:51] Scot Jung: and experience can be rather daunting
[9:51] Scot Jung: i mean
[9:51] Scot Jung: right now
[9:51] Scot Jung: in the room
[9:51] Scot Jung: while i am texting to u
[9:51] Scot Jung: one of u is saying hi to boy friend or spouse
[9:51] Scot Jung: one of u is checking email
[9:51] Scot Jung: one is working on phone call
[9:51] Scot Jung: etc
[9:51] Scot Jung: so
[9:51] Memetic Projects: yay for multitasking :)
[9:52] Scot Jung: if i do not take into account that u are a frree agent
[9:52] Scot Jung: and able to choose
[9:52] Scot Jung: and try to control u
[9:52] Scot Jung: the experience will be a failure
[9:52] Joop Zuhal: please do lexi
[9:52] Memetic Projects: are you familiar with Malcolm Knowles and his adult learning theories?
[9:52] You: thank you!
[9:52] Scot Jung: yes
[9:52] Joop Zuhal: feel free to do so lexi
[9:52] Scot Jung: one of my mentors
[9:52] You: :)
[9:52] Memetic Projects: andragogy rocks :)
[9:52] Scot Jung: indeed
[9:52] Scot Jung: do you know wlodkowski?
[9:53] Memetic Projects: I'm a big fan of Knowles and Carl Rogers experiential learning theories
[9:53] Memetic Projects: not familiar, no
[9:53] Scot Jung: check him out
[9:53] Joop Zuhal: do you want me to tell something about the Presences
[9:53] Joop Zuhal: ?
[9:53] Scot Jung: adult education and understanding the culruarl influence
[9:53] Scot Jung: sure, Joop
[9:53] Memetic Projects: http://www.context.org/ICLIB/IC27/Wlodkski.htm ?
[9:53] Scot Jung: and get out the cigars and good dutch beer while u are at it
[9:54] Joop Zuhal: These presences should be adressed in balance and conjunction
[9:54] Memetic Projects: cool thanks I will ;)
[9:54] Joop Zuhal: social presence is perceived as the strongest in SL, but the reality is
[9:54] Scot Jung: Mem, that is the guy
[9:54] Scot Jung: very good
[9:54] Joop Zuhal: that you have to work on all three at the same time and with the same strength

Social Presence

[9:54] Memetic Projects: cool, already on Amazon looking at his titles lol
[9:55] You: that is profound
[9:55] Scot Jung: :-)
[9:55] You: really critical for us, I think
[9:55] Joop Zuhal: teaching presence is not necessarily done or facilitated by a teacher\
[9:55] Joop Zuhal: it can be self regulatory as well
[9:55] Joop Zuhal: but it must be there
[9:55] Memetic Projects: can it be taught???
[9:55] You: what do you mean teaching presence doesn't need a teacher?

Teaching Presence

[9:55] Scot Jung: a heart issue as much as head
[9:56] You: self-directed learning?
[9:56] Joop Zuhal: i have made a large concept map of all the aspects of this model, using literature and discussion about it
[9:56] Joop Zuhal: yes
[9:56] Scot Jung: but innate human trait i think
[9:56] Scot Jung: to be curious and desire to grow
[9:56] Joop Zuhal: it can be found on my blog again
[9:56] Scot Jung: i think school often beats it out of us
[9:56] Scot Jung gave you community scheme.
[9:57] Scot Jung: at your convenvience, mem and lexi
[9:57] You: yes?
[9:57] You: this is incredible
[9:57] Joop Zuhal: In SL social presence is a present, almost, but cognitive presence is not easy to realize as we are unfamiliar with the means to teach, instruct or guide

Cognitive Presence

[9:57] Scot Jung: take a look and give feedback on the scheme for summer course
[9:57] You: such a rich discussion - and your sharing with us has been invaluable
[9:57] Joop Zuhal: also the mix with real life other means of communicatiom, sync and async
[9:57] You: May I share it with a couple people here?
[9:57] Scot Jung: right, Joop
[9:57] Scot Jung: for distance ed
[9:57] You: not post to wiki or anything, just show some educational research folk
[9:57] Scot Jung: mixed media is vital
[9:58] Scot Jung: please share
[9:58] Scot Jung: broadly
[9:58] You: thank you :)
[9:58] Scot Jung: and help refine
[9:58] You: shall I post?
[9:58] Scot Jung: y not?
[9:58] You: If you put on your blog, I could blog it here also
[9:58] You: cross link :)
[9:59] Joop Zuhal: teaching presence is assumed to be the most difficult for direct instruction, as scot said earlier, slightly less difficult are other didactical (pedegogical) approaches like quest, missions, puzzles, ill-defined questions, discourse, survey, exploration, etc
[9:59] Joop Zuhal: but again, we have little experience here
[9:59] You: lots of research waiting to be done
[9:59] Scot Jung: right
[9:59] You: We are officially out of time
[10:00] Joop Zuhal: http://aggiornamento-ii.blogspot.com/2008/02/community-of-inquiry.html
[10:00] Scot Jung: Black Peter (Hunter and Garcia)
[10:00] Scot Jung: See here how everything lead up to this day and it's just like any other day that's ever been Sun goin up and then the sun it goin down Shine through my window and my friends they come around come around come around
[10:00] You: If anyone needs to leave -
[10:00] You: but I am so excited by the conversation going on
[10:00] You: happy to hang around for a while!
