[9:18] You: Everyone take a copy of teh student tools in the box here by the entrance
[9:18] Vic Novi: hello all
[9:18] Gershom Wycliffe: Done.
[9:18] You: Hi, Vic
[9:18] You: They are on their way
[9:19] Vic Novi: hello, just dropping in for five minutes
[9:19] Gershom Wycliffe: Lexi, this book hovering in my field of view is the journal, I assume.
[9:19] You: Hi, Lydi!
[9:19] Title reader: LINES WRITTEN A FEW MILES ABOVE TINTERN ABBEY, ON REVISITING THE BANKS OF THE WYE DURING A TOUR. JULY 13, 1798
[9:19] Lydia Bracken: Hi there
[9:19] You: book?
[9:19] Gershom Wycliffe: That's what I see.
[9:19] Gershom Wycliffe: An open book.
[9:19] You: do you hear the voice reading?
[9:19] Rudolfo Woodget: yes, it seems the Journal HUD in Student tools appears as a book
[9:19] Gershom Wycliffe: OK
[9:19] You: They recorded the whole poem
[9:19] Rudolfo Woodget: Yes, I do. Make it stop!!!

WELCOME

[9:19] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: Good morning!
[9:20] Gershom Wycliffe: Good morning!
[9:20] Rudolfo Woodget winks
[9:20] You: Ah - I haven't put on the hud
[9:20] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks laughs
[9:20] You: Hello, Pip!
[9:20] Rudolfo Woodget: Helllooooo,Miss Fiddlesticks!
[9:20] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: it is a collision script so if someone is standing on the thing, it reads
[9:20] Lydia Bracken: good morning Mr Woodget
[9:20] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: can't stop it...but I did put in a delay
[9:20] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: Hi Mr. Woodget
[9:20] Rudolfo Woodget: Hello, Miss Bracken
[9:20] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: come in, please
[9:21] Lydia Bracken smiles
[9:21] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I wanted to make sure no one ever forgets the title of this poem
[9:21] Rudolfo Woodget wonders if this will be on the Quiz.
[9:21] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks laughs
[9:21] Gershom Wycliffe: They won't.
[9:21] You: I think I've got it!
[9:22] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: are you wearing your journal?
[9:22] You: Hello, Jane - nice to meet you :)
[9:22] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: Alright!
[9:22] Kinderella Bright: Hi!
[9:22] Jane2 McMahon: hi! I'm poking around here....this is a university class?
[9:22] You: You are welcome to join us
[9:22] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: Well, I wanted to use voice...but to no avail
[9:22] You: We are from University of Michigan, and taking a tour
[9:22] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: Hi Jane...just a tour
[9:23] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: but welcome.
[9:23] You: SL Slunkiness
[9:23] Jane2 McMahon: ah! I'm with the government of Saskatchewan Canada
[9:23] Gershom Wycliffe: But some of us (like me) have NO class ever.
[9:23] Jane2 McMahon: lol
[9:23] You: ahem
[9:23] Gershom Wycliffe: Wonderful!
[9:23] Kinderella Bright: arf arf!
[9:23] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks smiles and begins the tour
[9:23] Perplexity Peccable clears her throat at Master Wycliffe's statement
[9:23] Gershom Wycliffe: ~Smiles~
[9:23] Perplexity Peccable :)

TOUR BEGINS

[9:23] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: Welcome to the College of DuPage!
[9:24] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: some of it, at least....
[9:24] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: As you know, this is our rendition of Tintern Abbey
[9:24] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: The intent here, as you may have noticed, is to immerse the student in the poem
[9:24] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: this build was not intended for large groups...
[9:25] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: it is meant for small groups or individual reflection
[9:25] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: hence the irritation of hearing the title over and over
[9:25] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: Lydia designed the space
[9:25] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I did the scripted elements
[9:25] You: Very beautiful
[9:25] Lydia Bracken smiles
[9:25] Kinderella Bright: lovely!
[9:25] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: and we have a faculty member using this with first year comp students
[9:26] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks smiles
[9:26] You: Obviously an excellent partnership
[9:26] Bridget Jennings: I agree on first glance - very nice
[9:26] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: Yes, Lydia has an eye for detail
[9:26] Gershom Wycliffe: Yes. May I move here?
[9:26] You: I was just going to say that :)
[9:26] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I just make things happen
[9:26] Gershom Wycliffe: It's wonderful.
[9:26] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: you are welcome anytime to sit here
[9:26] You: Gershom, come visit me in Cedar :)
[9:26] Gershom Wycliffe: TY
[9:26] Gershom Wycliffe: I shall.
[9:26] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: many people do, its sort of shocking how many come here to just be alone
[9:27] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: but it is gratifying
[9:27] You: A meditation Garden
[9:27] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: something like that, yes.
[9:27] Rudolfo Woodget: Oh, no one goes there anymore; it's too crowded.
[9:27] Rudolfo Woodget winks
[9:27] You: lol

STUDENT ACTIVITIES

[9:27] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: well, I've tried to make this a fun experience for students
[9:27] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: since the poem is really no fun....!
[9:27] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks laughs
[9:28] Gershom Wycliffe: *sniffle* I always liked it...
[9:28] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: So, we have a bunch of activities
[9:28] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I do like it more now, promise
[9:28] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: We have a reading and listening area
[9:28] Gershom Wycliffe: ~Smiles~
[9:28] Gershom Wycliffe: Just like my students.
[9:28] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: where the students can read along as it is read
[9:29] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: The student's assignments are in these activity thingies
[9:29] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: and there's little apples that give them sound bites
[9:29] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: corny, I know.
[9:29] Gershom Wycliffe: No,... fruity.
[9:29] You: If it works for the students, then go for it!
[9:29] Gershom Wycliffe: Nice, though.
[9:29] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: let us go up to the sycamore and have a look above the space
[9:30] Kinderella Bright: :-)
[9:30] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: there's a teleport behind you
[9:30] You: Folks - if it is OK, I'd like to capture the chatlog, like usual, for our wiki
[9:30] To Beginning whispers: Please right-click and select Teleport
[9:30] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks reminds herself not to say curse words
[9:30] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: teleport behind you....
[9:30] You: That is a lovely map texture
[9:30] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: thanks
[9:31] You: folks right by me - the teleport box
[9:31] You: rt-click

OVERHEAD VIEW

[9:31] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: Wordsworth wrote a little footnote about how the poem came to be...
[9:32] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: so we recorded that and embedded it in these boxes
[9:32] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: he was "a few miles above" tinter
[9:32] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: hence this sky view
[9:33] Sound Box Intro 1: No poem of mine was composed under circumstances more pleasant for me to remember than this. I began it upon leaving Tintern, after crossing the Wye,...
[9:33] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: there's no falling off, so come out if you like
[9:33] Sound Box Intro 2 : and concluded it just as I was entering Bristol in the evening, after a ramble of four or five days, with my Sister.
[9:33] Gershom Wycliffe: I take it there's a voice, normally?
[9:33] Gershom Wycliffe: I can't hear it.
[9:33] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I made these sound objects also chat for those who cannot hear or do not have speakers
[9:33] Bridget Jennings: I heard the voice near box 2
[9:33] Gershom Wycliffe: Good idea.
[9:34] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: these are internal sounds...not media or voice
[9:34] Gershom Wycliffe: My speakers aren't very good. Maybe that's the prob.
[9:34] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: so, sometimes there's a lag
[9:34] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: or they go wonky
[9:34] You: I think I foudn a gap :)
[9:34] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: wonky is a technical term...
[9:34] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: uh-oh
[9:34] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: sorry Lexi
[9:34] Bridget Jennings: I need right click the box and touch it to hear the volice
[9:34] Gershom Wycliffe: Yes... rather like wobbly or pear-shaped.
[9:35] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I wanted the student to be more thoughtful with the clicking
[9:35] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: The journal HUD....
[9:35] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: is a nifty device
[9:36] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: you drop a note on it
[9:36] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: and it is delivered to the instructor
[9:36] Gershom Wycliffe: Ah!
[9:36] Gershom Wycliffe: Very nice.
[9:36] sound apple: FIVE years have past; five summers, with the length / Of five long winters! and again I hear /
These waters, rolling from their mountain-springs...
[9:36] You: OH WOW!!!!
[9:36] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks laughs
[9:36] Gershom Wycliffe: Is it possible for us to have similar software in our classes?
[9:36] You: Is there a ... shareware version of it?
[9:36] Rudolfo Woodget: how does it know who the instructor is?
[9:36] You: moddable?
[9:36] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I can share all of this work with you, yes.
[9:36] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: i will put together a packet
[9:36] You: or even for purchase :)
[9:37] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: nah..
[9:37] You: AngryBeth made a packet for educators
[9:37] Kinderella Bright: Thank you! :-)
[9:37] You: put it outside her shop, for $5L each ...
[9:37] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: AngryBeth is one of my heros
[9:37] You: Me, too :)
[9:37] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: heroes*
[9:37] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: heriones
[9:37] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: heroun
[9:37] You: lol
[9:37] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks giggles
[9:37] Gershom Wycliffe: I'll have to visit her shop.
[9:37] Perplexity Peccable chuckles softly

EXPLORATION & DESIGN

[9:37] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: shall we go down and ramble for a moment?
[9:37] You: Gershom - I will help with that
[9:37] Kinderella Bright: aye!
[9:37] You: let me take you over after this
[9:38] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I'd like to show you my favorite spot and take a picture of you all
[9:38] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: please use that column fragment to go down or fly..
[9:38] Kinderella Bright: sorry
[9:39] You: Bridget found the same gap I did
[9:39] Gershom Wycliffe: So say my students.
[9:41] Rudolfo Woodget: a lovely spot indeed!
[9:41] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I have so much work left to do here
[9:41] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks makes notes
[9:41] Gershom Wycliffe: I couldn't tell!
[9:41] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: everytime I show it
[9:41] Gershom Wycliffe: This is very nice.
[9:41] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I find something to add or subtract
[9:41] Rudolfo Woodget: it's already so rich and immersive
[9:41] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: this is my favorite area
[9:42] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: thank you. I appreciate that
[9:42] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: This apple does two things..
[9:42] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: it gives the full text and evokes a browser so the student can read along
[9:43] Rudolfo Woodget: 1) knowledge of good and evil 2) good in Pies?
[9:43] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: The person who performed the poem for us is a Chemistry prof and an actor
[9:43] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: and obviously British
[9:43] Kinderella Bright: RW -- stoppppp!
[9:43] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks just gets the joke...
[9:43] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks laughs
[9:43] Lydia Bracken: I beg your pardon, but RL calls
[9:44] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: you are a card Mr. Woodget!
[9:44] Lydia Bracken: and I must leave
[9:44] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: ooh Lyds!
[9:44] Kinderella Bright: bye
[9:44] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: thanks!
[9:44] Gershom Wycliffe: Good bye Lydia! Nice meeting you!
[9:44] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: talk to you soon!
[9:44] Rudolfo Woodget: Wonderful job, Miss Bracken!
[9:44] Lydia Bracken: lovely to meet you all
[9:44] Lydia Bracken: thank you Mr Woodget
[9:44] Lydia Bracken: have a good day
[9:44] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: Remember that Miss Bracken is available for design work, everyone!
[9:44] You: Marvelous usability and attention to detail - very thoughful design
[9:44] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: She's amazing
[9:45] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I would like to take a picture of you all, if that's alright
[9:45] Gershom Wycliffe: Sure!
[9:45] You: Absolutely!
[9:45] Kinderella Bright: sue
[9:45] You: I'll be posting some to flickr also
[9:45] Kinderella Bright: sure!

STUDENT RESPONSE & SUPPORTING MATERIALS

[9:45] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: done!
[9:45] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I also created a book of critical essays for the students
[9:46] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: which is another activity...
[9:46] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: but those articles are from our databases
[9:46] Rudolfo Woodget: what kind of feedback have you gotten from the students?
[9:46] You: so limited to your own students by copyright
[9:46] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: Thank you Mr. Woodget...
[9:46] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: the loved it
[9:46] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I was really surprised
[9:47] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: and they gave me fantastic feedback on how the space worked, or did not work, for them.
[9:47] Kinderella Bright: surprised?
[9:47] Rudolfo Woodget: that's so helpful!
[9:47] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: They were actually quite reticent at first...new stuff.
[9:47] Kinderella Bright: ah...
[9:47] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I thought I was gonna read something and write a paper
[9:48] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: but they enjoy being here
[9:48] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: and did very well with the SL learning curve
[9:48] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: so we'll bring in another group this term
[9:48] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: and those experienced students are signed on to help the new ones

SECOND LIFE LEARNING CURVE

[9:48] You: Would you please talk about the learning curve?
[9:48] Bridget Jennings: Was this their first SL experience
[9:49] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: yes, it was.
[9:49] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: We had expected that we'd spend hours getting them to navigate independently
[9:49] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: and learn to interact with the space
[9:49] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: it took about 20 minutes
[9:50] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: It took me two weeks to figure this out
[9:50] Bridget Jennings: I still think the UI takes some getting used to (but after about 10 hours things are pretty smooth)
[9:50] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: but I'm really old
[9:50] Rudolfo Woodget: good to have the old students back as mentors
[9:50] You: :)
[9:50] You: I was terrified of making a mistake, so it took me two weeks also
[9:50] Rudolfo Woodget: Did you bring them here immediately? or did they go thour Orientation Island?
[9:50] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: That is a goal for us...to involve the students in this as much as we can
[9:50] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: No, actually
[9:50] Gershom Wycliffe: I was scared off by SL's reputation. Took me forever to learn it could be wholesome and even interesting.
[9:50] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: We brought them in at the NMC sign up
[9:51] Gershom Wycliffe: Navigation wasn't so hard.
[9:51] You: I've heard that before
[9:51] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I despise Orientation Island with all my heart
[9:51] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I've a list of alternate sign up sites, if you'd like that
[9:51] You: I don't despise it, but ought to look at the NMC one
[9:51] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: and more surnames to choose from!
[9:51] You: Yes - VERY MUCH!!!
[9:51] Kinderella Bright: yes!
[9:51] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks smiles
[9:51] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I will include that in your packet
[9:51] You: Tools, tools
[9:51] Bridget Jennings: There is not enough help for newbie in Orientation Island
[9:51] You: You are a wonder :)

EDUCATOR'S TOOLS & TOOLKITS

[9:51] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: its all about the tools..indeed.
[9:52] You: I am building an educator's freebie area on our island
[9:52] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: My next venture is going to be fun...
[9:52] Rudolfo Woodget: I was given a signin survey yesterday -- about whether I lked my name and would I pay for a custom name of my choosing
[9:52] You: but want to open it up
[9:52] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: ooh, that would be great
[9:52] You: Interesting
[9:52] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: only superstars get to choose names
[9:52] You: If I have to, I can duplicate it elsewhere
[9:52] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: that would be great Lexi
[9:53] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: tools are scattered all over
[9:53] Gershom Wycliffe: Hm. I'd like Maher-shallal-hash-baz. But no one asks me.
[9:53] You: They are
[9:53] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I am trying to catalog them
[9:53] You: and I've been collecting and sorting
[9:53] You: me, too
[9:53] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks laughs
[9:53] You: we should compare notes sometime
[9:53] You: librarians :)
[9:53] Rudolfo Woodget watches teh librarians talk.
[9:53] You: lol
[9:53] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I'm a librarian...I'd get you cataloged if you stand still long enough
[9:53] You: occupational hazard
[9:53] Kinderella Bright: :-)
[9:53] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: Are you a librarian Lexi??
[9:53] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: Oh good grief..I did not catch that!

AUDIO INTEGRATION

[9:54] You: Tell me more about how you managed to integrate teh sound here?
[9:54] You: Very yes
[9:54] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks high fives Lexi
[9:54] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: sure...
[9:54] You: back atcha :)
[9:54] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: this is a very simple script
[9:54] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: we recorded the poem in our sound studio here at the College
[9:54] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: we selected bits
[9:54] You: So you put the script in teh object, and a copy of the sound file?
[9:54] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I chopped it up
[9:55] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: the catch is...
[9:55] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: sound files can be no longer than 10 seconds long
[9:55] You: /(lessons learned)
[9:55] You: that must have been a challenge
[9:55] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: but you *could* make the script play them in a pre-determined order
[9:55] You: wow
[9:55] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks shrugs. worth the effort
[9:55] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I chose not to do that
[9:55] You: ok for voice, but that would be hard for music
[9:56] Kinderella Bright: yes
[9:56] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: because i was concerned about the lag time for the files to load
[9:56] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I highly recommend your coming here sometime and listening to the poem all the way through
[9:56] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: the reading is quite moving
[9:57] You: I think it would mean more
[9:57] Kinderella Bright: just follow the numbered boxes?
[9:57] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: you would use this glowing apple
[9:57] Gershom Wycliffe: I like the guy's reading in the bits I've heard so far. He's very talented.
[9:57] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: he did it in one go!
[9:57] You: really :)
[9:57] Bridget Jennings: impressive
[9:57] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: he made me cry and I was miffed about that!
[9:57] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks laughs
[9:57] Kinderella Bright: those Brits... :-)
[9:57] You: :)
[9:58] Gershom Wycliffe: Wow! I've done things like that--he's better than I am--much, much better!
[9:58] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: he's a wonder
[9:58] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: he does an excellent Macbeth too
[9:58] You: Oooohhh

CLASSROOM & EDUCATION SPACE DESIGN

[9:58] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: well, shall we visit the classroom?
[9:58] Bridget Jennings: sure
[9:58] Kinderella Bright: yes
[9:58] You: Hey, we're educators
[9:58] Gershom Wycliffe: I have a feeling he could make the phone book interesting.
[9:58] You: alwalys want to see classrooms!
[9:58] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: alright, we'll go back over the bridge
[9:58] Rudolfo Woodget: there's a classroom too?
[9:58] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: he is a lovely man...I adore him
[9:58] You: YOu should hear me read the phonebook with a french accent :)
[9:58] Kinderella Bright: wow!
[9:59] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: here's my little teleporter
[9:59] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: to the clouds
[9:59] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: WW's life mask
[9:59] Gershom Wycliffe: Lydia has good taste--Botanical textures!
[9:59] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: she does
[9:59] Kinderella Bright: beam me up, Scotty
[9:59] You: Bridget?
[9:59] You: back here
[9:59] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: Bridget's having a ramble
[9:59] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: let's TP her up
[9:59] You: I think you walked over the teleporter
[10:00] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: Kinderell
[10:00] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: a
[10:00] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: behind you on the ground
[10:00] You: I am looking at it
[10:00] Teleport Tile: Please right-click and select Teleport
[10:01] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I made a bunch of College info too
[10:01] You: stars in the clouds ....
[10:01] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks smiles
[10:01] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I do love this space
[10:01] Gershom Wycliffe: I like the dreamlike appearance.
[10:01] Kinderella Bright: it is beeeeautiful!
[10:01] Gershom Wycliffe: Space... the final SL frontier...
[10:01] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: My next goal is to reduce the lag in both of these areas
[10:01] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: its very texture-y
[10:01] Gershom Wycliffe: Yes.
[10:02] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: so we want to get to where we can load these textures for people without them knowing it before they enter the space
[10:02] You: That sounds tricky
[10:02] You: I can think of ways it might work though
[10:02] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks listens to the cameras going off and hopes her hair is alright
[10:02] Kinderella Bright: :-)
[10:02] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: From what I've found out...
[10:02] You: if you have the textures embedded down below in some small item
[10:02] Gershom Wycliffe: It's fine!
[10:02] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: we need only to put them on a box
[10:03] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: hide the box at the front
[10:03] You: exactly :)
[10:03] Kinderella Bright: nuts... gotta go. Thank you very much! This was wonderful :-)
[10:03] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: and the user's machine will render them even if they are not visible
[10:03] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: Bye Kinderella

THE MICHIGAN CONNECTION

[10:03] Rudolfo Woodget: before we go, can you tell us about your Michigan connection, Miss Fiddlesticks?
[10:03] You: Thank you for coming, Kinderella :)
[10:04] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: Oh, certainly!
[10:04] You: Wow - really?
[10:04] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks smiles
[10:04] Rudolfo Woodget goes Blue.
[10:04] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I graduated from the main campus at Dearborn in 1995
[10:04] Perplexity Peccable mutters blues go ...
[10:04] Gershom Wycliffe: Really?
[10:04] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: went to Henry Ford CC for my first two years
[10:04] You: Wahoo!
[10:04] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I did indeed
[10:05] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: Those two years at Dearborn are wonderful memories for me.
[10:05] Gershom Wycliffe: We probably passed in the hallways--at both schools!
[10:05] Bridget Jennings: Which program at UM-D?
[10:05] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: In all likelihood, yes.
[10:05] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: English
[10:05] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I took every class I could take with Dr. Pebworth
[10:05] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: he made up stuff for me to do!
[10:05] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: LOL
[10:05] Bridget Jennings: Thye had already exlied me from CASL to Engineering by then
[10:06] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I worked in the library for several years too
[10:06] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: as a clerk
[10:06] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: little work, lot of fun
[10:06] You: that is how I started, too -
[10:06] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks smiles
[10:06] You: circ and shelving and clerical
[10:06] You: filing catalog cards
[10:06] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: they were wonderful mentors
[10:06] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I would like to make an offer to your faculty....
[10:07] You: How very generous!
[10:07] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: should any like to use Tintern with a class
[10:07] You: I will send out the word
[10:07] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: it is available and I will mod the activities for them
[10:07] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: and this space is available
[10:07] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: people use it all the time
[10:07] Gershom Wycliffe: Wow. You'll definitely have my students knocking at your door--so to speak.
[10:07] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: but you have UM-D's space
[10:07] You: and Wolverine Island
[10:07] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: Which is lovely and useful
[10:08] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: Wolverine Island??
[10:08] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks sighs
[10:08] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I had no idea
[10:08] Gershom Wycliffe: Yes, but Tintern is quite special.
[10:08] You: That is the main UNAA campus in SL
[10:08] Bridget Jennings: Both lovely, but very generic
[10:08] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I see
[10:08] You: But nothing like this is there
[10:08] You: UMAA
[10:08] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: there was intent here, Lexi
[10:08] You: it is more campus, rather than specific activity support
[10:08] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I don't know what I'd do if someone asked me for a generic space
[10:08] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: this clouds thing is the closest I could come to generic
[10:09] Gershom Wycliffe: You mean your real campus doesn't hover in the sky?!
[10:09] You: It is inspiring
[10:09] You: It lifts the spirits
[10:09] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I don't believe in SL buildings really
[10:09] Bridget Jennings: I am still looking for funding to support creatring immersive computing content
[10:09] Gershom Wycliffe: It's very nice. Surreal.
[10:09] Gershom Wycliffe: Encourages imagination.
[10:09] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: Funding is a challenge!
[10:10] You: Break the boundaries
[10:10] Bridget Jennings: very inspiring here
[10:10] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: and will always be
[10:10] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks nods
[10:10] You: Our space is much more liek RL
[10:10] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I'm flattered, thank you
[10:10] You: We are talking about skyboxes tho
[10:10] You: possibilities
[10:10] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I am proud of it but I see flaws everywhere
[10:10] Perplexity Peccable ponders
[10:10] Gershom Wycliffe: Creative people always do.
[10:10] You: There is always improvement
[10:10] You: that is how we learn
[10:10] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I am hoping no one asks me for a building
[10:11] You: why?
[10:11] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks shrugs
[10:11] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I see them as artifacts
[10:11] You: :)
[10:11] Gershom Wycliffe: I'd love a building of moonbeams and rainbows!
[10:11] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: If they are meant to enhance role play
[10:12] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: or to mimic RL
[10:12] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: then yes

ECONOMICS OF THE SPACE

[10:12] You: The thing about no funding is you can do what you want without having to make adminsitrators happy
[10:12] Rudolfo Woodget scribbles a little note.
[10:12] You: If you have to follow the party line, it will always look conventional
[10:12] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I will share with you the cost of this entire build if you like...
[10:12] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: we paid 400.00 for the space for one year
[10:12] You: Very wonderful - is that OK to include in our wiki?
[10:12] Bridget Jennings: I would like to knoe
[10:12] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: sure
[10:12] You: wanted to make sure
[10:13] You: Very economical
[10:13] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: so 400.00 for the parcel from the Alliance Library system
[10:13] Bridget Jennings: What are the dimensions?
[10:13] You: I am paying more than that for my rental :)
[10:13] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: and about, oh, 30.00 for the stuff we did not make ourselves
[10:13] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: and about 50 hours of time, total
[10:13] You: You're joking!
[10:13] You: I've spent WAY more than that!
[10:13] You: timewise
[10:13] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I'd say that's feasible for any institution
[10:14] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: we made a lot of the things here, Mr. Woodget
[10:14] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: and used free things
[10:14] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: lots and lots of free things
[10:14] Rudolfo Woodget: Excellent craftspersonship
[10:14] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: and tweaked them to make them look nice

FREEBIES, OPEN SOURCE & COPYRIGHT IN SECOND LIFE

[10:14] You: I believe in freebies
[10:14] Gershom Wycliffe: I like free things--not just because they're free, but philosophically.
[10:14] You: I should make a tshirt that says that :)
[10:14] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I worship the Freebie Goddess myself
[10:14] Gershom Wycliffe: Like open-source software.
[10:14] You: Precisely
[10:15] You: I did an essay on the evolution of copyright
[10:15] You: current practice is 180 degrees opposed to original intent
[10:15] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: open-source is good...but I do not wholly support it in SL.
[10:15] You: because ?
[10:15] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: Content creators need to protect their work
[10:15] You: yes
[10:15] Gershom Wycliffe: Oh, definitely.
[10:15] You: that is a difficult balance inworld and outworld
[10:15] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: and let's face it...the lawyers are going to get involved
[10:15] You: I am starting to sell clothes
[10:15] Gershom Wycliffe: But when the creators themselves decide to distribute their stuff--I admire that a lot.
[10:15] You: assume that folks will steal teh textures and such
[10:16] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I admire the generosity too
[10:16] You: I figure that is part of the cost
[10:16] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: Well, this is a good time to tell you about my next project!
[10:16] Gershom Wycliffe: When I get my house finally built, I will probably give copies to friends.
[10:16] You: Yahoo!!
[10:16] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks laughs
[10:16] Gershom Wycliffe: But if I wanted a business, I'd have to think otherwise.
[10:16] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I'm really interested in copyright in Virtual Worlds
[10:16] Gershom Wycliffe: Or make them non-transfer or some such.
[10:16] You: I make one freebie for each line of clothes, and then the others are low-cost
[10:17] Gershom Wycliffe: Admirable!
[10:17] You: yes - no trans moddable helps
[10:17] Bridget Jennings: I'm SE and rather giving my work to UM I'd rather give it to the masses
[10:17] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: the copyright violations and outright theft that I see in SL makes my librarian heart break to pieces
[10:17] You: yes - give to everyone
[10:17] You: really?
[10:17] Gershom Wycliffe: If anyone wants an English-style thatched cottage, full perms, let me know in a week or two!
[10:17] You: You see, I figure the copyright laws are screwed to begin with
[10:17] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: Even the American Library Association's build has copyright issues!
[10:17] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks laughs
[10:17] Gershom Wycliffe: But more seriously, yes, people should own the rights to their creations.
[10:18] You: I'd be delighted, Master Wycliffe!
[10:18] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: and there's no copyright education here
[10:18] Gershom Wycliffe: ~Smiles~
[10:18] You: I've seen some
[10:18] You: there is a coalition now
[10:18] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I suggested it to ALA, very strongly, and the did an art installation instead on their island
[10:18] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: they*
[10:18] You: many businesses have posters on their property now
[10:18] Bridget Jennings: We do some in my senior desing classes (because in RL intellectual property does matter)
[10:18] You: about copyright and ownership and legal matters
[10:18] You: a friend of mine actually sues people
[10:18] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: its all open turf

FUTURE PLANS & CLOSING COMMENTS

[10:19] Rudolfo Woodget: and what is your next project, Miss Fiddlesticks?
[10:19] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: the copyright thing...
[10:19] You: Good for you
[10:19] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: an information center
[10:19] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: interactive though
[10:19] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: it will be a copyright game of sorts
[10:19] Gershom Wycliffe: Information about what?
[10:19] You: You've seen Robin Good's Texture Tutorial?
[10:19] Gershom Wycliffe: Oh... I typed too soon.
[10:19] You: I think that model might work for this topic
[10:19] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: and then there's my industrial safety project
[10:19] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: but that's a hard one
[10:19] You: Aha!
[10:20] You: copyright game sounds intriguing
[10:20] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I teach industrial safety believe it or no
[10:20] You: could we have you come back and talk with us about that at a future date?
[10:20] Bridget Jennings: I agree (but I am biased)
[10:20] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: and I'm dying to cut my students hands off and drop them from scaffolding
[10:20] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: a girl can dream...
[10:20] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I'd love to, Lexi.
[10:20] Perplexity Peccable quivers and hides
[10:20] You: cutting hands off ...
[10:21] Gershom Wycliffe: I'm glad I'm not your student, suddenly.
[10:21] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: Industrial safety is hard to teach without simulation
[10:21] You: I think a number of us would be interested in discussing the copyright idea
[10:21] Rudolfo Woodget: Thank you for the amazing tour, Miss F! I must be off to RL
[10:21] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks nods to Mr. Woodget
[10:21] Rudolfo Woodget votes for copyright discussion in future.
[10:21] Bridget Jennings: Me too (thanks very much)
[10:21] You: Very wonderful!
[10:21] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I was glad to see you all today.
[10:21] Gershom Wycliffe: Yes, thank you for the lovely tour.
[10:21] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: Thank you for thinking of COD!
[10:21] You: I was iafraid it wasn't going to work :)
[10:21] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: and come back anytime
[10:21] Gershom Wycliffe: But what the heck was that Pie comment? I never got it!
[10:21] You: Gershom, did you want to make a side trip?
[10:21] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: apples, Sir, apples
[10:22] Gershom Wycliffe: Sure!
[10:22] You: Ah
[10:22] Gershom Wycliffe: Ah.... thanks.
[10:22] You: lol
[10:22] Gershom Wycliffe: Brain lag.
[10:22] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks smiles
