INTRODUCTIONS

[9:09] Gillian Oh: Fleep, it is very funny but I just came across your name and pic today while randomly wandering somewhere online
[9:09] Fleep Tuque: Hehe I hope it was in a good context. :)
[9:09] You: Oh, Fleep is *everywhere*
[9:09] Gillian Oh: Oh yes, something about you being wonderful
[9:09] You: and she is, too
[9:10] Gillian Oh: I was surprised when you popped up here. It's a small world
[9:10] Fleep Tuque: Hehe
[9:10] Memetic Projects: hehe
[9:10] You: OK, folks
[9:10] You: change of plan. :)
[9:10] Fleep Tuque: The SL education community is an especially small world, I like that we all seem to manage to meet each other eventually. :)
[9:10] You: Fleep has agreed to step in for Tab
[9:10] You: HURRAY!!!
[9:10] Memetic Projects: kewl :)
[9:10] Fletcher Pinion: heh
[9:10] You: Fleep, in case you don't know her
[9:11] You: is very prominent in the Second Life educational communities, especially with ISTE
[9:11] You: at least - that's how I know her best. :)
[9:11] Fletcher Pinion: You've heard "been there, done that, got the t-shirt?" Fleep designed the t-shirt

FLEEP'S SL - EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND

[9:11] You: Fleep, I believe you coordinate some schools that are in SL?
[9:11] Fleep Tuque laughs!
[9:11] Fleep Tuque: I do a couple of different things,
[9:11] You: Fleep, these are informal "fireside" chats
[9:11] Memetic Projects: hehe
[9:12] Fleep Tuque: For my day job, I work at the University of Cincinnati in the Instructional & Research Computing Department
[9:12] Fleep Tuque: where I manage our campus wide podcasting and Second Life projects
[9:12] You: We are just trying to learn more about education how-tos in SL, and talk with people who have more or different experience
[9:12] Fleep Tuque: we have about 48 faculty in our SL learning community
[9:12] Fleep Tuque: and have courses and research ongoing on our islands here.
[9:12] Fleep Tuque: I'm also the Second Life Ambassador for the Ohio Learning Network, which is a consortium of about 80 colleges and universities in Ohio
[9:12] You: Holy cow!
[9:12] Fleep Tuque: I do many of the same things for OLN that I do for UC - help facilitate courses, manage in world resources, and etc.
[9:13] Fleep Tuque: And in my copious spare time
[9:13] Fleep Tuque: :)
[9:13] You: lol

SECOND LIFE COMMUNITY CONVENTION - EDUCATION TRACK

[9:13] Fleep Tuque: I also run a mainland community here in SL called Chilbo, and am co-chairing the SL Education Community Conference this year
[9:13] Fleep Tuque: SLEDcc is part of the official Second Life Community Convention, which will be in Tampa, FL in September 5-7th. :)
[9:14] You: I hope I can come. :)
[9:14] Gillian Oh: I attended the conference in Chicago. It was quite good.
[9:14] You: YOu did? YOu should tell us about it!
[9:14] You: another meeting
[9:14] Fleep Tuque: Those are the highlights, anyway, I really love helping educators get a sense of what's possible in Second Life and helping them find the resources they need to get started on their own projects.
[9:14] You: Fleep - we actually have someone who just decided to host a meeting here in world in two weeks
[9:14] You: piping an RL meeting in for SAKAI
[9:14] Philomena Flanagan: Is that the SAKAI?
[9:15] You: :)
[9:15] You: It sounds like you might have some experience with doing this
[9:15] You: We are complete noobs
[9:15] Fleep Tuque: If you're interested in digging up dirt later, some websites of interest: UC Second Life: http://homepages.uc.edu/secondlife Chilbo: http://chilbo.org SLEDcc08: http://sledcc.wikispaces.com and my personal blog is at http://fleeptuque.com
[9:15] Fleep Tuque: :)
[9:15] You: Bravo!

LIVE RL/SL EVENTS - TIPS & TRICKS

[9:16] Fleep Tuque: Well, piping in a live meeting isn't TOO difficult
[9:16] Fleep Tuque: so long as you have a one or two people on both ends who can run the technology for you
[9:16] Fleep Tuque: In my experience, the speakers really can't do both things simultaneously.
[9:16] You: We haven't done anything like this before
[9:16] You: unless Memtic has
[9:16] Memetic Projects: nope
[9:16] Fleep Tuque: You need someone at the live real life location who can stream quicktime
[9:16] You: got it
[9:17] Fleep Tuque: So a standard webcam will do, so long as the speaker is miced
[9:17] Fleep Tuque: er has a microphone, how do you write that? :)
[9:17] Fleep Tuque: mic'ed?
[9:17] Fleep Tuque: laugh
[9:17] You: lol
[9:17] Fleep Tuque: Then they run the live feed through the QT encoder, and pass the streaming URL to someone in world who can set the URL on the land where it will be viewed.
[9:18] You: and then the inworld person manages communications and troubleshooting/training?
[9:18] Fleep Tuque: The important thing is SL can only accept quicktime streams
[9:18] Fleep Tuque: so windows media or adobe connect or other things won't work.
[9:18] Philomena Flanagan: PS The Language Resource Center will host a broadcast location for those who do not have avatars but want to listen
[9:18] Fleep Tuque nods.
[9:18] You: critical to know
[9:18] You: Thank you, PHilomena :)
[9:18] Fleep Tuque: Yes, I usually like to have at least a 3 person team
[9:18] You: Thanks, Fleep - this is great info!
[9:19] Fleep Tuque: 1 person in RL to do the filming, 1 person in RL to handle questions and feedback to the speaker, and 1 person in SL to take questions from the SL audience to pass back to RL and set the stream up.
[9:19] Fleep Tuque: That's pretty much the minimum in my mind.
[9:19] You: We are so lucky there was a mixup with Tab, and I am so grateful you came :)
[9:19] Fleep Tuque: If you start combining too many responsibilities, it can get a little hairy. :)
[9:19] Fletcher Pinion: What tools can you use to do the QT streaming? Ustream?
[9:19] Fleep Tuque: I don't think UStream works in QT format
[9:19] You: I don't even know what to ask - thanks, Fletcher!
[9:20] Fleep Tuque: I've used a variety of different things
[9:20] Fleep Tuque: Let me see if I can find a link
[9:20] You: Fleep - would it be alright with you if we post the chatlog to our wiki?
[9:20] You: And Fletcher, also - ok?
[9:20] Fletcher Pinion: fine by me
[9:20] Fleep Tuque: Sure fine with me. :)
[9:20] You: Thank you, thank you :)
[9:20] You: The wiki is at http://slum.wetpaint.com
[9:21] Fleep Tuque: Veodia is the tool that folks seem to have the least trouble with
[9:21] Memetic Projects: silly seat is locking my camera in place and I can't look at ppl :P
[9:21] Fleep Tuque: Here's a link to a blog post about it: http://blog.secondlife.com/2007/10/16/the-next-best-thing-to-being-there/
[9:21] You: I am curious what kind of computer you have that is letting you switch back and forth with apps so easily
[9:21] Fletcher Pinion: Memetic - seat didn't lock mine. Esc-Esc to free the camera
[9:21] Fleep Tuque: Well, I have three monitors, that helps. :)
[9:22] You: Thanks - my sound card fried - I didn't get the beep that there was a new IM tab
[9:22] Fleep Tuque: Hehe

SECOND LIFE EDUCATION COMMUNITY CONFERENCE

[9:23] Fleep Tuque: For those of you unfamiliar with the Second Life Education Community Conference
[9:23] Fleep Tuque: we'll be having in-world activities to compliment the live events in Tampa
[9:23] Fleep Tuque: I hope you'll join us!
[9:23] Fleep Tuque: We've just extended the deadline for the call for proposals
[9:23] Fleep Tuque: and we're looking to incorporate many ways for folks to become involved even if they can't attend in person.
[9:23] You: Tab says we'll reschedule and hope SL is not so flaky next time
[9:24] Fleep Tuque: The website is http://sledcc.wikispaces.com and it has a ton of info
[9:24] Fleep Tuque: Some of the things that are different this year from last year include a building competition called "The Sleddies" Awards
[9:24] You: Wow!
[9:24] Fleep Tuque: some workshops to get hands on training
[9:24] Fleep Tuque: and we hope to convene some "working groups" sessions to actually produce some results for the broader SL community
[9:24] Fletcher Pinion: and it's free for in-world only attendees - big bonus
[9:25] You: The only way I usually attend :)
[9:25] Fleep Tuque: At this point, I think we'll be working to provide some boilerplate language that faculty can include in a syllabus or K-12 folks can use in parent permission slips
[9:25] You: but I miss the f2f meetup
[9:25] Fletcher Pinion: ON my travel budget, the only way I CAN attend
[9:25] You: precisely :)
[9:25] Fleep Tuque: We'll tackle a discussion about how to get a good directory going of all the institutions and courses using SL so we have good examples to show our administrators
[9:26] Fleep Tuque: AND, not top sekret but not public yet
[9:26] Fletcher Pinion: K-12 will have to piggyback on an adult - watch over their shoulder - to avoid TOS issues w/ LL, right?
[9:26] You: hmmmm
[9:26] Fleep Tuque: I think we'll be having some roundtables to give LL feedback about what educators hope to see from Second Life in the next 2-3 time frame. :)

TEEN GRID AND GAIA

[9:26] You: I was talking with someone who wants to do vocational recruitment on the teen grid
[9:26] Fleep Tuque: Well, K-12 isn';t really accurate, it's actually 7-12
[9:26] You: a professional association
[9:26] Fletcher Pinion: EDUCAUSE is also looking to create a "clearinghouse" - you talking w/ them?
[9:26] Fleep Tuque: The teen grid can accomodate students 13 -17 years old
[9:27] Fleep Tuque: and there are a number of great projects going on in the Teen Grid already.
[9:27] You: It is hard to find them
[9:27] Fleep Tuque: Yes
[9:27] Fleep Tuque: That's a problem we ALL face
[9:27] You: My son is on teen grid and finally just quit
[9:27] Fleep Tuque: no one knows who all is doing what, where, and with whom!
[9:27] Fleep Tuque: :)
[9:27] You: Are you doing any work with Whyville or There.com or Gaia?
[9:27] Fletcher Pinion: the perenial parents' concern...
[9:27] You: or Croquet?
[9:27] Fleep Tuque: People ask me all the time how many classes are using SL and we just have to say "I don't know."
[9:28] You: I bet
[9:28] Fleep Tuque: I've been in a bunch of other VWs
[9:28] You: I heard Whyville is very active with teens
[9:28] Fleep Tuque: Kaneva, There, vSide, Vastpark, Twinity and some of the kids worlds
[9:28] Fleep Tuque: They're all interesting implementations
[9:28] Fleep Tuque: and might be useful for targetted activities,
[9:28] You: I did a presentation at a local school, and 75% of the 6th grade class was in Gaia
[9:28] You: I went in and poked around
[9:29] Fleep Tuque: but as far as I can tell, no other virtual world environment offers the flexibility for user created content that Second Life does.
[9:29] You: over half the groups I found were based on sexual activities
[9:29] Fleep Tuque: So if you want to reach kids where they are, doing an event in one of the other worlds might be a good thing
[9:29] Fleep Tuque: but if you want to bring kids to somewhere where you can control the environment and experience, SL is still the best thing available
[9:29] You: Fleep, that is a great perspective
[9:29] Fleep Tuque: (in my personal opinion, of course, nothing is set in stone!)
[9:29] You: What a nutshell!
[9:29] You: It keeps changing
[9:30] You: We only go up from here, right?
[9:30] Fleep Tuque: Hehe, we can only hope!
[9:30] You: Are there best practices you've found for doing education inworld?
[9:30] Fletcher Pinion: waitwait - 75% of a 6th grad class was in Gaia, and half the groups were about sex?!>!!
[9:30] Fleep Tuque: I think the hardest thing is seeing past today's glitches
[9:30] You: yes
[9:30] Fletcher Pinion: gaaahhhh
[9:30] You: Hi, Fletcher
[9:30] You: I was shocked by a lot of the groups in Gaia

SECOND LIFE EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES - PLANNING AND EXAMPLES

[9:31] Fleep Tuque: The key is figuring out your goal before you begin planning your in world activities
[9:31] You: I plan to blog about it
[9:31] You: So, Fleep, 1st step is to define your target - desired outcome
[9:31] Fleep Tuque: Are you trying to increase class participation and engagement? Are you trying to spice up a dull part of the curriculum? Are you trying to expose students to industry experts?
[9:31] Fleep Tuque: What you choose to do in Second Life will be different for each of those goals
[9:32] Fleep Tuque: And of course, if your institution is looking to do marketing or provide student services in SL, that's a completely different ball of wax then everything else I just mentioned. :)
[9:32] Fletcher Pinion: How about using the unique affordances of SL to do things you simply cannot do any other way? That's what I'm interested in
[9:32] You: And then best practices depend on the goal
[9:32] Fleep Tuque: They all require different approaches and often even different "builds" in Second Life to effectively facilitate them.
[9:32] You: Yes - uniqueness is wonderful
[9:32] Fleep Tuque: There are a couple of things that I think are unique to this platform
[9:33] Perplexity Peccable cups hands behind ears
[9:33] Fletcher Pinion: A lot of things we do in SL can be done other ways, more easily.
[9:33] Fletcher Pinion: Collaborative 3D construction of scripted objects - that's a Cool Thing
[9:33] Fleep Tuque: I think the first thing is exposure to an international body of experts - there is a community in Second Life that is particular to this evironment and doesn't exist anywhere else, as far as I know
[9:34] Fletcher Pinion: Hi, Sheri
[9:34] Fleep Tuque: If you want to know what the manufacturing industry is thinking about the future of virtual world technology, you'll find them in SL
[9:34] Fleep Tuque: Medical experts, scientists, business people
[9:34] Fleep Tuque: If you want to expose students to cutting edge technology that is happening in real life, right now, that's one thing you can do in SL that's hard to do elsewhere.
[9:34] Fletcher Pinion: but how to find them?
[9:35] Fleep Tuque: And then yes, like Fletcher mentioned, collaborative 3D building, and scripted, programmable simulations
[9:35] Fleep Tuque: I just did a profile on the SLED blog with some chemistry professors
[9:35] You: Fletcher, for finding medical experts, try http://slhealthy.wetpaint.com
[9:35] Fleep Tuque: http://sl-educationblog.com/
[9:35] Fleep Tuque: They talk about how hard it is to demonstrate some concepts to students on paper -
[9:35] Fleep Tuque: like how molecules bond together to form more complex compounds
[9:36] You: Yes! Great for pharmacy
[9:36] Fleep Tuque: and how easy it is to show that same material when you present it in Second Life in 3D form
[9:36] Fleep Tuque: The atoms build the molecules right before the students eyes, and then students can see all the steps in between as the molecules bond together.
[9:36] Fletcher Pinion: especially when students can rotate molecules themselves
[9:36] You: yes, yes, yes :)
[9:36] Fleep Tuque: That's a cool use of the platform that I don't think is really replicated elsewhere.
[9:36] You: Genetics simluations at Genome Island
[9:36] Fletcher Pinion: AND you can shoot a machinima of if to put on YouTube for use outside of SL
[9:36] Fleep Tuque: Not just rotate the molecules, but go into them!
[9:36] Fleep Tuque: Walk around them, see them from any perspective
[9:37] You: The 3d testis model
[9:37] Fleep Tuque: Hehe yes, there are lots and lots of great examples
[9:37] You: Fleep - where is that build?
[9:37] Fletcher Pinion: And it is much simpler to do in SL than oter 3D modeling tools
[9:37] You: I'd love to go see the molecules

AMERICAN CHEMISTRY SOCIETY

[9:37] Fleep Tuque: It's on the American Chemistry Society island at http://slurl.com/secondlife/ACS/225/25/101
[9:37] You: Ah yes, they opened last month
[9:37] Fleep Tuque: Well, that's Hiro and Horace's workspace, check the blog post for additional slurls, including to a bunch of great science related freebies
[9:38] You: Bridget, Fleep is filling in for Tab, who got locked out of SL
[9:38] Fleep Tuque: They just gave me a copy of their 3D periodic table of elements, it's really cool.
[9:38] Fleep Tuque: :)
[9:38] You: Boy, did we get lucky!!
[9:38] Bridget Jennings: OK (sorry I'm late)
[9:38] Fleep Tuque: Hi Bridget. :)
[9:38] Fleep Tuque: I can't build here or I'd rez the table
[9:38] Fleep Tuque: hehe
[9:38] Sheri Jefes: Hi Bridget, I'm U.M.Flint
[9:38] Bridget Jennings: hi
[9:38] You: Can you pass me a copy
[9:38] You: ?
[9:38] You: I can rez
[9:39] Fleep Tuque: Oh bummer it's no trans.
[9:39] Fleep Tuque: But you can pick up your own copy on the ACS island. :)
[9:39] You: OK - will do
[9:39] You: we'll make a field trip
[9:39] Bridget Jennings: That would be great
[9:39] Fleep Tuque gave you American Chemical Society HQ, ACS (95, 222, 35).
[9:39] You: One of our faculty has an office there
[9:39] Fleep Tuque: Did everyone get a LM?
[9:39] You: Thank you very much!
[9:40] You: I can send it to anyone later

SECOND NATURE, NOAA AND MORE

[9:40] Fleep Tuque gave you Second Nature, Sci Fi (99, 50, 23).
[9:40] Fletcher Pinion: yes, thanks. I also tagged the slurl in delicious under secondlife and chemistry
[9:40] Memetic Projects: sorry I gotta go there's exam problems
[9:40] You: Yes - Second Nature is a real showpiece
[9:40] Fleep Tuque: The second one is to the Second Nature island, which is affiliated with the Nature journal
[9:40] Fleep Tuque: :)
[9:40] You: MP was protoring an exam while here
[9:40] Fletcher Pinion: Is that the place with the glacier sim?
[9:41] Fleep Tuque: I think that's NOAA
[9:41] Fletcher Pinion: right
[9:41] You: I haven't seen a glacier there
[9:41] Fleep Tuque: the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration island
[9:41] You: Second nature has a collection of the best of science on SL collected in one place
[9:41] You: with tons of great freebies
[9:41] Fleep Tuque: They have a tsunami, glacier, and you can fly through the eye of a hurricane, all kinds of great stuff.
[9:41] You: moddable molecules and such
[9:41] You: spacesuits
[9:41] Fletcher Pinion: You know what would be good? A tour of great sites, either HUD-controlled, or train some SLED docents to lead tours
[9:41] You: Wow! I haven't been to NOAA lately
[9:42] You: They've really grown!

SALAMANDER FOR EDUCATIONAL DISCOVERY AND TOURS

[9:42] Fleep Tuque: I have a HUD of edu locations
[9:42] Fletcher Pinion: but of course....
[9:42] You: The problem I've found is that the locations keep moving and the slurls fail
[9:42] Fleep Tuque: but we're working with SaLamander and some other HUD builders to do an even better directory of in world locations, we hope to have it ready by SLEDcc
[9:42] Fleep Tuque nods.
[9:42] You: Bingo
[9:42] Fleep Tuque: That's sometimes a problem for sure!
[9:42] Fletcher Pinion: Like the flaoting island in the original Dr Dolittle
[9:42] You: I want the Salamander designer to come speak with us
[9:42] You: Salamander
[9:43] Fleep Tuque: SaLamander is a project to tag and categorize edu locations in Second Life so you can easily find them
[9:43] You: I need to remember to wear my hud and use it
[9:43] Fletcher Pinion: sweet
[9:43] Fleep Tuque gave you SaLamander HUD vendor 0.1i.
[9:43] Fleep Tuque: If you can pop that out Perplexity
[9:43] Fleep Tuque: everyone can grab a copy of the latest hud
[9:43] You: OH - I should put this in our SL library
[9:43] You: along with instructions
[9:43] Fletcher Pinion: I've got fleep's 12/06 hud
[9:43] Fleep Tuque: When you wear the hud, you can then search the entire repository of tagged locations
[9:43] You: a community-built wiki
[9:43] Fleep Tuque: it's GREAT for real time tours
[9:43] Fleep Tuque: chemistry
[9:43] Salamander HUD whispers: Your query returned the following results:
1) Second Nature ::: secondlife://Second Nature/135/96/23
2) Science Center ::: secondlife://Infotainment Island/77/119/31
3) Infotainment ::: secondlife://Infotainment Island/125/128/32
[9:43] You: Very impressive!
[9:44] Fleep Tuque: When I'm in front of a live audience for a demo, I can take requests from the audience and plug in the search term to pop over to that type of location
[9:44] Fleep Tuque: english
[9:44] You: ok, I am really excited :)
[9:44] Salamander HUD whispers: Your query returned the following results:

[9:44] Fletcher Pinion: yimminy crickets!
[9:44] Fleep Tuque: This shows faculty in real time how many choices there are
[9:44] Fleep Tuque: :)
[9:44] Fleep Tuque: And gives you great ideas before you start your own builds!
[9:44] Fletcher Pinion: CASE method at work

INVENTORY MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES

[9:45] Fleep Tuque: And of course if you wear the HUD all the time like I do, you can just tag places whenever you find a new learning object
[9:45] Fleep Tuque: and that gets added to the directory for anyone to use.
[9:45] You: I have a folder called "always wear" that includes my huds and hair and skin and such
[9:45] Fleep Tuque: hehe me too
[9:45] You: I should put this in it
[9:45] Fleep Tuque: Mine is called "EMERGENCY FLEEP"
[9:45] Fleep Tuque: for those days when your clothes accidently disappear. :)
[9:45] You: Aha! :)
[9:46] Bridget Jennings: I am confused where is the HUD you are describing
[9:46] You: I name my main folders with ! - [name] so they float to the top
[9:46] Fletcher Pinion: The worst Ive seen is default pants on you
[9:46] Fleep Tuque: Perplexity, can you rez that Salamander kiosk?
[9:46] You: Bridget I have one and will put a vendor in the lbirary
[9:46] You: one sec
[9:46] You: there it is :)
[9:46] Bridget Jennings: thanks I'll look on my way home
[9:46] Fleep Tuque: I think inventory management is a key skill for being able to really work in Second Life
[9:46] Fleep Tuque: The interface is simply terrible
[9:46] Fleep Tuque: there's no other way to put it.
[9:46] Sheri Jefes: Thanks Lex
[9:46] Fleep Tuque: heh.
[9:47] You: Yes - there are all kinds of tips and tricks
[9:47] You: I am working on a mini-tutorial for new folk
[9:47] Fleep Tuque: I highly recommend some of the free classes on inventory managment tricks, it's a very worthwhile time investment if you plan to do any serious SL work.

RECOMMENDED CLASSES

[9:47] Fleep Tuque: (Just search for education events in the Search button)
[9:47] Fletcher Pinion: that's the hud help - what abotu the actual hud?
[9:47] You: like from NCI?
[9:47] Sheri Jefes: Ok, sorry to change the subject, but Lexi, do you ever sleep?
[9:48] Fleep Tuque: NCI, Rockcliffe University, TeaZers
[9:48] Fleep Tuque: they all offer good courses.
[9:48] Fletcher Pinion: got it
[9:48] You: not enough, and I am starting to get a bit weird with lack of sleep this week
[9:48] You: Fleep doesn't seem to sleep either!
[9:48] Fleep Tuque laughs.
[9:48] Fleep Tuque: I dream of Second Life when I do some times. :)
[9:48] You: There is just so much good stuff to do and see and people to help
[9:48] You: it is hard to say no
[9:49] Fleep Tuque: one of the other sort of "overlooked" uses for SL
[9:49] You: oh, yes?
[9:49] Fleep Tuque: is just how much professional development facutly and instructional designers have access to in world
[9:49] You: I am thinking of the people resources
[9:49] Fleep Tuque: If you plug in to the broader community, there is an AMAZING number of discussions, conferences piped in, etc
[9:49] You: Yep!
[9:49] Fleep Tuque: that you have access to for free that you'd otherwise have to pay for in the real world.
[9:50] You: My professional productivity has skyrocketed here
[9:50] Fleep Tuque: These things are about stuff OTHER than Second Life or teaching in Second Life
[9:50] Fleep Tuque: I attended a great workshop on podcasting, for example
[9:50] You: cool!
[9:50] Fleep Tuque: or the UN Conference on Climate Change
[9:50] You: and all the science and nanotech content
[9:50] Fleep Tuque: those things are piped into SL and accessible in ways that I'd otherwise not be able to do.
[9:50] You: and health presentations
[9:50] Fleep Tuque: Oh yes, the science and health groups do some amazing things.
[9:51] Fleep Tuque: Science Friday on NPR
[9:51] Fleep Tuque: That one's fun
[9:51] Fletcher Pinion: again, how do you find it (asked on behalf of typical newbies)
[9:51] Salamander HUD whispers: Your query returned the following results:
0 results found
[9:51] You: and the libraries have all those book readings and author presentations

WEB SEARCHING TIPS FOR SECOND LIFE

[9:51] Fleep Tuque: Search is improving somewhat
[9:51] Sheri Jefes: Yes, I agree. Speaking of which, do you have info about the multicultural course and SL connections. I'm looking for places in SL with music and culture to explore with a multicultural course.
[9:51] Fleep Tuque: but googling for "second life" and whatever topic you're interested in is the best bet
[9:51] You: actually I use a filter in google
[9:52] Fleep Tuque: If I'm looking for locations, I often include "slurl" as a search term
[9:52] You: ("second life OR secondlife OR (SL (virtual OR metaverse) OR slurl)
[9:52] Fleep Tuque: nod
[9:52] You: yes - slurl also
[9:52] Bridget Jennings: is google better than using SL search to find things in SL?
[9:52] You: yes
[9:52] Fleep Tuque: Yes, usually
[9:52] You: actually they will find different items
[9:52] You: so use BOTH
[9:52] You: and use the SL search on the website for SL
[9:52] Fleep Tuque: Another terrific way to find live events and meetings is the various educational google calendars
[9:53] You: which gets diff things than the inworld search

USING AND FINDING CALENDARS

[9:53] Fleep Tuque: I have a link on my personal website to all the best calendars, if I do say so myself. ;)
[9:53] Fletcher Pinion: What would be useful is a central list of "stuff" that you could browse rather than searching
[9:53] Fleep Tuque: general education, science education, and library groups
[9:53] You: rss feeds
[9:53] Philomena Flanagan: thanks, these are useful tips
[9:53] Fletcher Pinion: What I like abt twitter is the serendipity of finding new things
[9:53] You: marvelous!

[9:53] You: and there is a twitter account for SL events that annoucnes them as they start
[9:54] Fletcher Pinion: *cups ears*
[9:54] You: I follow it
[9:54] Fleep Tuque: That has alist of events every single day that are happening all over the grid that might be useful for educators to know
[9:54] You: let me see if I can fidn it
[9:54] You: say - I'll post it in the chatlog, OK?
[9:54] Fleep Tuque: Then of course, in world events are often advertised in groups too
[9:55] Fleep Tuque: Did everyone get the groups notecard?
[9:55] Fleep Tuque gave you Educational Groups in Second Life. (see blog)
[9:55] Bridget Jennings: yes
