[9:00] Gershom Wycliffe: Oh?
[9:00] Gershom Wycliffe: Is it summery yet?
[9:00] Tab Scott: this week is
[9:00] Gershom Wycliffe: Good.

[9:03] Joyous Schism: Hi all
[9:03] Gershom Wycliffe: Hello!
[9:03] Perplexity Peccable: pull up a stump :)
[9:03] Memetic Projects: hullo L(

[9:04] Tab Scott: Hi Memetic
[9:04] Tab Scott: Hi everyone
[9:04] Perplexity Peccable: Nice sweater, Joyous
[9:05] Vic Novi: Hi Tab, how do you like Wolverine Island?
[9:05] Perplexity Peccable: He hasn't had a chance to see much of it yet - don't know if he will have time for a tour
[9:05] Tab Scott: This is nice, I haven't had a chance to look around but I like this campfire.
[9:05] Perplexity Peccable: Hi, Philomena!
INTRODUCTIONS
[9:05] Perplexity Peccable: I am thinking let's go ahead and start the introductions
[9:06] Perplexity Peccable: can we go around the circle starting with Me, I guess, and give RL department and what you want to know about SL education
[9:06] Perplexity Peccable: I am Lexi, working in health sciences, and interesting in best practices
[9:06] Perplexity Peccable: Vic?
[9:06] Vic Novi: Hello I am Vic, eLearning Specialist with Sch of Public Health
[9:06] Perplexity Peccable: Meme?
[9:07] Perplexity Peccable: Gershom?
[9:07] Gershom Wycliffe: OK--I work in the Composition Program at UM-Dearborn, and am very interested in using SL as an online learning environment for both traditional and Web courses.
[9:08] Gillian Oh: I'm Gillian, working in Public Health, interested generally in what folks are doing
[9:08] Perplexity Peccable: Gillian?
[9:08] Perplexity Peccable: Philomena?
[9:08] Philomena Flanagan: Hi, I'm Philomena from the Language Resource Center, interested in activities for lang and culture students.
[9:08] Perplexity Peccable: Bridget, dahling, you look mahhhvelous
[9:08] Bridget Jennings: thanks
[9:08] Perplexity Peccable: we are introducing ourselves
[9:08] Memetic Projects: Marc Stephens, medical school learning resrouce center, multimedia designer
[9:09] Perplexity Peccable: I think Bridget, you are the last :)
[9:09] Bridget Jennings: I teach software enigneering and game desing
[9:09] Perplexity Peccable: Joyous - you are with what department (aside from library) Literature?
[9:09] Joyous Schism: I'm Joyous, librarian in the humanities, Grad Library
[9:09] Perplexity Peccable: Wonderful!
[9:09] Bridget Jennings: at UM-D
INTRODUCING TAB SCOTT
[9:09] Perplexity Peccable: Tab is a UM alumni.
[9:10] Tab Scott: : )
[9:10] Perplexity Peccable: He works with a lot of very creative architecture training innovations and has been teaching in SL since 2005.
[9:10] Perplexity Peccable: I'm sure he can tell us a lot of useful tips!
[9:10] Perplexity Peccable: Takeit away!, Tab!
[9:10] Tab Scott: Thank you.
[9:10] Perplexity Peccable: Is it ok to share chatlog with our wiki?
[9:10] Tab Scott: As Lexi mentioned, I'm a UofM grad.
[9:11] Tab Scott: sure
[9:11] Perplexity Peccable: Thanks :)
[9:11] Tab Scott: I lived in Ann Arbor 1968-1976, so long long ago but not far away.
[9:11] Tab Scott: I was present when UM got it's first main frame.
[9:12] Tab Scott: fun
[9:12] Perplexity Peccable: lol!
[9:12] Tab Scott: I entered SL in June 2005
[9:12] Gershom Wycliffe: Happy rez day!
[9:12] Tab Scott: thank you : )
[9:12] Perplexity Peccable: Indeed!
[9:12] Perplexity Peccable: We'll have a present for you later :)
[9:12] Tab Scott: wow 3 years now.
[9:13] Tab Scott: I was in the College of Architecture in Design back when it was on main campus over by East Quad.
[9:14] Tab Scott: so I am somewhat familiar with UM but not so much the recent activity.
[9:14] Tab Scott: I'm vey pleased to see UM people in here
[9:14] Perplexity Peccable: w00t!
[9:14] Tab Scott: and have very fond memories and feelings toward UM.
[9:15] Tab Scott: thank you Lexi (for the shirts) : )
[9:15] Perplexity Peccable: Now you can show you are an alum :)
DIFFERENT TEACHING/LEARNING CULTURES[9:15] Tab Scott: since this is a very talented group, please feel free to speak up as you have questions.
[9:16] Perplexity Peccable: I am curious what are the most valuable lessons you've learned about teaching in Second Life -- what has worked, and what hasn't?
[9:16] Tab Scott: I'll be happy to address specific things, but can also give you the benefit of my perspective in SL so far, as well.
[9:16] Tab Scott: OK for me one lesson is that, there is no "one way" that everyone should adopt.
[9:16] Perplexity Peccable: :)
[9:16] Tab Scott: I have my experience and have addressed the groups that I am teaching in here.
[9:16] Perplexity Peccable: different strokes for different folks
[9:17] Tab Scott: and in many ways I am extremely fortunate in that
[9:17] Tab Scott: I started working with architects, artists, musicians, and film makers.
[9:17] Tab Scott: and bringing them into SL is very....
[9:17] Tab Scott: how you say
[9:18] Perplexity Peccable: interesting?
[9:18] Tab Scott: differnt that the Business School, if you know what I mean.
[9:18] Perplexity Peccable: :)
[9:18] Memetic Projects: lol
[9:18] Memetic Projects: artists are more fun than suits
[9:18] Tab Scott: I have the business school here at MSU in here now and we are focused on "office hours".
[9:18] Perplexity Peccable: wow - that's unusual
[9:19] Tab Scott: whereas with the architects we were building things the first day.
[9:19] Tab Scott: I was on the Main Land for the first two months in SL before I started teaching and found that for me....
[9:20] Tab Scott: I did not find that environment condusive to teaching/learning, so I got a private island that I can restrict to my class.
[9:20] Memetic Projects: indeed
[9:20] Gershom Wycliffe: *nods enthusiastically*
[9:21] Tab Scott: This is not what all teachers want, and I understand the differences of opinion on this topic.
[9:21] Memetic Projects: I think of it as having a classrom of one's own to teach in as opposed t oteaching on the Diag
[9:21] Tab Scott: I just find it difficult to teach while little squirrels crash there spaceships into my students, lol ;:)
[9:21] Tab Scott: yes
[9:21] Tab Scott: exactly
[9:22] Tab Scott: their*
[9:22] Gershom Wycliffe: If that's all that happens, it's a NICE mainland neighborhood.
[9:22] Perplexity Peccable: herding cats 101
[9:22] Tab Scott: one of the challenges I find is meeting the dual requirements of "doing" work, and then reporting on what we have done.
[9:22] Perplexity Peccable: to steal Memetic's phrase :)
[9:23] Tab Scott: That's why I particularly enojoy opportunities like this to share what we are doing with others that are interested.
THE COST OF SUCCESS
[9:23] Tab Scott: at one time I received 300 requests inone week by Universities to tour our class
[9:24] Memetic Projects: lol
[9:24] Tab Scott: that is a bit overwhelming and we do not have the band width to accomodate that level of tours.
[9:24] Perplexity Peccable: holy cow!
[9:24] Philomena Flanagan: sounds like you need a machinima tour
[9:24] Bridget Jennings: Do you have any guides on buying islands and setting up access restrictions?
[9:25] Tab Scott: plus when I asked the students, they expressed that they were not a petting zoo and like working on their projects without 30 people running around with clipboards interviewing them.
[9:25] Tab Scott: lol
[9:25] Perplexity Peccable: that's what you get for being famous
[9:25] Bridget Jennings: I can emphathize
[9:25] Memetic Projects: lol
[9:26] Perplexity Peccable: That has happened with JS Vavoom also
[9:26] Philomena Flanagan: that's a good point
[9:26] Perplexity Peccable: his students now hide instead of show off
STUDENT ACTIVITIES & COLLABORATION(S)
[9:26] Tab Scott: Brigette, I'd be happy to privide you any information that I have on the topic of islands. LL keeps changing things often enough that I may not have the latest data.
[9:27] Bridget Jennings: If you can point me to resources - great (I think we buying an island this Fall)
[9:27] Tab Scott: Yes, if any of you have any thoughts or suggestions on how to address the "publishing" issue, I'm open to suggestions.
[9:27] Memetic Projects: as an estate manager here and elsewhere I can answer questions that might arise about that too
[9:27] Philomena Flanagan: What do you and your students do in SL?
[9:27] Bridget Jennings: I had to MP's brian as well
[9:27] Tab Scott: As all are, we are just hard working people trying to do what we need to do and hope to find good ways to share that information in the academic community.
[9:28] Tab Scott: The first year I taught a class on Digital Collaboration for Architects.
[9:28] Perplexity Peccable: what do you mean by "publishing" issue? The risk of fame?
[9:28] Bridget Jennings: I hope to publish stuff on any SL work I do at the annual IEEE Frontiers in Ed conferences
[9:28] Tab Scott: oh, "publishing" -- informing the academic community of what we have doen and what we have learned.
[9:28] Perplexity Peccable: grat!
[9:29] Perplexity Peccable can't type
[9:29] Tab Scott: before the first year, I built a college campus on the island before the school year started.
[9:29] Perplexity Peccable: sounds familiar
[9:29] Tab Scott: then I realized that it might be robbing the students of one of the most exciting things.........a blank island.
[9:29] Tab Scott: I took everything off
[9:30] Philomena Flanagan: !
[9:30] Perplexity Peccable: so insightful!
[9:30] Memetic Projects: especisally for artsy folk and architects
[9:30] Tab Scott: and then when they showed up I gave them the assgnement that they would learn to work together in SL to figure out what to bulding and how to build it.
[9:31] Tab Scott: architects are still in the Ayn Rand/Fountainhead/Howard Roake mode of singular creative genius.
[9:31] Tab Scott: They had no idea how to collaborate.
[9:31] Tab Scott: SL is a great environment within which to teach this.
[9:31] Perplexity Peccable: HOw did you teach collabroation?
[9:32] Perplexity Peccable: that is an interesting question
[9:32] Tab Scott: Well, the first day of class, two students zoomed ahead and got a week and a half into my lesson plan in the first four hours of class.
[9:32] Philomena Flanagan: Yes, even tho group work has been around forever, many students struggle with collaboration
[9:32] Perplexity Peccable: lol
[9:32] Tab Scott: yes
[9:33] Tab Scott: so they became my teaching assistants.
[9:33] Bridget Jennings: They do, but part of the challenge to make projects large enough that they cannot be completed by one person
[9:33] Philomena Flanagan: good point
[9:33] Perplexity Peccable: but not overwhelming so they give up
[9:33] Tab Scott: and I told them that their grade depended on everyone in the class know what they knew....not them continuing to separate theri wonderful skills and talent from the class.
[9:34] Bridget Jennings: I amd an SE and Computer Sceince colleagues don't get the large project tema stuff
[9:34] Tab Scott: knowing*
[9:34] Tab Scott: I'd be very interesting to hear about your experiences their Bridget.
[9:35] Bridget Jennings: Most of my classes have 4 and 8 month projects in them
[9:35] Bridget Jennings: many for exsternal customers
[9:35] Tab Scott: When the CS Gang of Four started worshipping Christopher Alexander's Pattern Language in 1995, I'm not sure that was the best thing to do.
[9:36] Tab Scott: The first year I would put a CS person who knew LSL scripting (language) together with an archtiect and log the converesation in IM I could later show them exactly where the conversation left the tracks and was derailed.
[9:37] Perplexity Peccable: WONDERFUL!
[9:37] Perplexity Peccable: Amazing
[9:37] Tab Scott: I found the IM great for letting conversations go bad then reveiwing them
[9:37] Perplexity Peccable: wow
[9:37] Perplexity Peccable: I hadn't thought of marketing SL to the Communication Science folks
[9:37] Bridget Jennings: I see some of the sam e things in a class that pairs 4 SE's with 4 art students from CCS to build 3D games
[9:37] Tab Scott: rather than constantly interrupting and warning them of things that were about to happen (like Casssandra)
[9:38] Tab Scott: oh
"THERE IS NO COLLABORATION WITHOUT COMMUNICATION"
[9:38] Tab Scott: what I found out the first year is
[9:38] Tab Scott: there is no collaboration
[9:38] Tab Scott: without communication.
[9:38] Bridget Jennings: That's what I like about projects - kids have to experience mistakes before they ask me for advice
[9:38] Memetic Projects: amen!~
[9:38] Tab Scott: oh Bridget, good point.
[9:38] Perplexity Peccable: that was the take-away, folks
[9:38] Tab Scott: that's an excellent example of the need for communication and working together
[9:39] Tab Scott: in these worlds.
[9:40] Tab Scott: In year one, we ONLY used text/chat/IM for the first half of class.
[9:40] Tab Scott: and then half way through I introduced Skype and Gizmo Project.
[9:40] Tab Scott: For artists and architects and musicians and film makers, we need our hands for working
[9:40] Tab Scott: hard to "talk" and work at the same time.
[9:40] Tab Scott: with Voice, we could talk and work.
[9:41] Tab Scott: but we missed having transcripts of everything
[9:41] Tab Scott: and then we were back to "ok does someone take notes, or what?"
[9:41] Tab Scott: any thoughts on that?
[9:42] Bridget Jennings: Someone has to take notes at design meetings (even if it is just listing decisions)
[9:42] Perplexity Peccable: I can't use voice
[9:42] Perplexity Peccable: so folks have to repeat in chat for me :(
[9:42] Bridget Jennings: Design notes are invaluable to avoid rehashing the same arguments over and over
[9:42] Perplexity Peccable: friends who are deaf also
[9:43] Gershom Wycliffe: And the utterly wretched quality of much voice communication in SL.
[9:43] Perplexity Peccable: poor control and balance
[9:43] Tab Scott: I will be visiting a school in Montana for deaf and blind students.
[9:43] Perplexity Peccable: voice often creates confusion
[9:43] Tab Scott: I think that will be a challenge to rise to
[9:44] Tab Scott: as to how SL can best work with all students.
[9:44] Bridget Jennings: Skype avoids Lexi's problem and Gershom's as well
[9:44] Perplexity Peccable: My computer cannot do both Skype and SL
[9:44] Tab Scott: well, with Skype video conferencing it's nice.
[9:44] Perplexity Peccable: I've heard that from lots of folks
[9:44] Bridget Jennings: I gave who use Skype, but I do not
[9:44] Memetic Projects: a lot of ppl are lucky to get SL running alone
[9:45] Tab Scott: I gave a presentation from my Lab in Montana to a University in Costa Rica using SL and Skype
[9:45] Perplexity Peccable: bravo!
[9:45] Tab Scott: they had 250 students, the president of the school and the directors of the art, film and archicture programs.
[9:45] Bridget Jennings: Back to using tewo computers at the same time
[9:46] Tab Scott: They have invited me down to teach in September, they are eager to learn.
[9:46] Tab Scott: ok
TECHNOLOGY CHALLENGES
[9:46] Tab Scott: now you have brought up a very important issue
[9:46] Vic Novi: for most application in the current state of the internet requires use of multiple computers for succesful synchrnous interaction
[9:46] Tab Scott: many people cannot get SL to work on their computers.
[9:46] Vic Novi: True that, Tab
[9:47] Tab Scott: it's a big challenge and is overlooked too much by LL in my opinion.
[9:47] Vic Novi: We take the bandwidth and cache memory problems for granted, until we use commercial internet connections at home etc
[9:47] Tab Scott: I know they are doing their best, but I'm sure we all have tremendous difficulty in representing to our schools, divisions, offices, that this is a reasonable solution.
[9:47] Vic Novi: not sure if "cache memory" is the right tech term
[9:48] Tab Scott: I will tell you something....if you don't mind posting this part Lexi?????
[9:48] Gershom Wycliffe: There are also those of us who work from home whenever possible, because the only affordable comp at work is powered by an arthritic little hamster who gets very tired, very fast.
[9:48] Perplexity Peccable: up to you
[9:48] Bridget Jennings: I think it's good enough - clearly resources are downloaded to the local HD with each new teleport (I see grey people and no clothes)
[9:49] Tab Scott: ok please don't post the next few items, I'm happy for the group here to know.
[9:49] Perplexity Peccable: OK - lips zipped
[snip]
CROQUET AND NEXT-GEN VIRTUAL WORLDS
[9:51] Bridget Jennings: Any thougth on Croquet?
[9:51] Memetic Projects: book: Web 2.0 New Tools, New Schools. Very useful.
[9:52] Perplexity Peccable: Thank you!
[9:52] Tab Scott: I really believe in the potential of the 3D internet and am on committes looking a Croquest, Qwak, Wonderland, etc.
[9:52] Perplexity Peccable: Yes - I'd liek to hear more about Croquet
[9:52] Tab Scott: ok
[9:52] Tab Scott: Croquest is not as far along as SL
[9:52] Tab Scott: that is the most important thing to know.
[9:52] Bridget Jennings: I motices a beta sticker on the homepage
[9:53] Tab Scott: ok this is public info again now.
[9:53] Perplexity Peccable: Thank you :)
[9:53] Tab Scott: I was a memeber of a group gathered by the Mellon foundation in February.
[9:53] Perplexity Peccable: Croquet I heard was mostly for k-12
[9:53] Perplexity Peccable: is that true?
[9:53] Tab Scott: in can be for anyone, really.
[9:54] Perplexity Peccable: ok
[9:54] Perplexity Peccable: Harvard is there, I heard
[9:54] Perplexity Peccable: but I can't find out what they are doing
[9:54] Tab Scott: one instance of a product built on Croquet, something called Qwak, is aimed at "business" markets.
[9:55] Tab Scott: they have Gumby-like avatars upon which you can put a photgraph of your face (non-vanity avatars, someone from Qwak called them)
[9:55] Perplexity Peccable: so why croquet and not SL?
[9:55] Tab Scott: ok
[9:55] Perplexity Peccable: what is it offering?
[9:55] Memetic Projects: is it mac compatible?
[9:55] Tab Scott: excellent question.
[9:56] Tab Scott: There are those that feel that the "next Generation" of Virtual worlds shoudl include
[9:56] Perplexity Peccable: lol
[9:56] Perplexity Peccable: children
[9:57] Tab Scott: an environment suitable for the level of academic, scholarly, and research standards whithin which the academy is used to operating.
[9:57] Perplexity Peccable: and privacy standards
[9:57] Perplexity Peccable: Croquet will offer that?
[9:57] Joyous Schism: Excuse me -- work calls.
[9:57] Tab Scott: Safety for children,
[9:58] Tab Scott: thank you for coming Joyous : )
[9:58] Memetic Projects: bye Joyus
[9:58] Gershom Wycliffe: Good-bye!
[9:59] Perplexity Peccable: Wow - time flies!
[9:59] Bridget Jennings: AGREED
[9:59] Gershom Wycliffe: Tempus fugit *thinking Latin somehow was needed*
[9:59] Perplexity Peccable: lol
[9:59] Perplexity Peccable: I completely lost track of time
[9:59] Memetic Projects: hehe
[9:59] Tab Scott: Croquet is an open-source platform that is available for people to base there work and build upon. I beleive that there is even less "adult supervision" than we experience here in SL, but it is cognizant of the issues that LS has encountered and wishes to avoid soem of them.
FAREWELLS
[9:59] Tab Scott: ooops
[9:59] Tab Scott: shall I stop now?
[10:00] Perplexity Peccable: not on my account!
[10:00] Tab Scott: you all have to get back to your day jobs.
[10:00] Perplexity Peccable: I'll keep listening :)
[10:00] Tab Scott: I can come back another time if you desire.
[10:00] Memetic Projects: I'm doing both this whole time so....
[10:00] Bridget Jennings: no rush on my account
[10:00] Gershom Wycliffe: Nah, let Her Majesty the Queen wait for a while.
[10:00] Tab Scott: lol
[10:00] Memetic Projects: hehe
[10:01] Perplexity Peccable: Tab, as an alumni you are welcome to join us ANY time
[10:01] Tab Scott: ok I'll say a couple of more, important things that I think you should knowl.
[10:01] Perplexity Peccable: a lot of our group is usually alumni
TAKE-AWAYS: PILTDOWN DISSERTATIONS
[10:01] Tab Scott: At the Mellon foundation meeting someone said that " the 3D internet (SL) is like the supercolider for the humanities."
[10:02] Tab Scott: You are all on the right track.
[10:02] Tab Scott: be brave
[10:02] Tab Scott: follow your intersts here
[10:02] Tab Scott: you are pioneers
[10:02] Perplexity Peccable: :)
[10:02] Tab Scott: the second thing I would include is
[10:03] Tab Scott: keep your sense of humor, wonder, and awe about how remorkable this environment is,
[10:03] Tab Scott: and do not take our educational/academic roles too seriously.
[10:03] Memetic Projects: oh neat phrase
[10:03] Tab Scott: Rememeber they gave 250 PhDs on the topic of the Piltdown Man
[10:03] Memetic Projects: LOL
[10:03] Perplexity Peccable: :)
[10:04] Tab Scott: and they took back none of them when after 40 years it was proven to be a hoax.
[10:04] Tab Scott: WE are all students
[10:04] Tab Scott: all of the time
[10:04] Tab Scott: allof our lives.
[10:04] Perplexity Peccable: Wow - you are sure good at the soundbytes ;)
[10:04] Memetic Projects: hear hear for lifelong learning
[10:04] Perplexity Peccable: very quotable
[10:04] Gillian Oh: Thank you very much for speaking with us today
[10:04] Tab Scott: My pleasure
[10:04] Gershom Wycliffe: Piltdown Man wasn't real ?! *gasps*
[10:04] Perplexity Peccable: Thank you, thank you!
[10:05] Memetic Projects: yah! good stuff!
[10:05] Tab Scott: 'I really do apreciate the opportunity.
[10:05] Gershom Wycliffe: Yes, thank you very much, Tab!
CONTACT INFORMATION
[10:05] Perplexity Peccable: Hope you will visit us again from tiem to ttime
[10:05] Gershom Wycliffe: It was a pleasure to hear your ideas.
[10:05] Perplexity Peccable: feel free to stop by Wolverine anytime
[10:05] Bridget Jennings: it was good
[10:05] Tab Scott: please contact me if you have any questions at any time.
[10:05] Gershom Wycliffe: A generous offer! Thank you, and thanks for coming.
