Pharmaceutics 465 Presentations in SL
As part of the Pharmaceutics 465 course that I am teaching at the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy, I have asked students to set up SL accounts. We are posting our class debate presentations in SL, to share with the rest of the U of M Wolverine (SL) community. The presentations are currently going up at the NorthEast Sandbox of Wolverine Island. While the idea of visiting SL as part of a pharmacogenomics/individualized medicine course has its rough edges that need to be polished, I think that exposing pharmacy students to Second Life while teaching them about virtual patient communities that are forming around genetic disease predispositions is important from a practitioner standpoint. Despite all the difficulties associated with briniging a class of 73 students into SL, I am confident that in five or ten years, pharmacogenomics textbooks will be looking back at these presentations as one of the first successful examples of the incorporation of virtual worlds into the practice and teaching of individualized medicine.
