[10:01] Corwin Howlett: Alll right it is now 10:01 and I would like to turn the floor over to our next presenters onthe subject of Academic Health Libraries.
[10:01] Perplexity Peccable: Folks I locked the slide project so that it doesn't accidentally forward while I'm talking
[10:01] Perplexity Peccable: Hi, everyone!
[10:01] Perplexity Peccable: My name is Lexi
[10:01] Perplexity Peccable: and the other person here from our team is Kaiya
[10:01] Kaiya Qunhua: Hi!
[10:01] Perplexity Peccable: I am getting over pneumonia
[10:01] Perplexity Peccable: so there might be gaps when I blow my nose
[10:01] Perplexity Peccable: apologies in advance :)
[10:02] WhiteBoard (e) VWLEM: Showing Image 2/53 - HSL-VWLEM0002
[10:02] Perplexity Peccable: Just a little background abotu academic health sciences libraries
[10:02] Perplexity Peccable: the main difference between us and other academic libraries is the clinical portion of our service and collections
[10:02] Perplexity Peccable: like other university libraries we support research and the full range of academic activities
[10:02] WhiteBoard (e) VWLEM: Showing Image 3/53 - HSL-VWLEM0003
[10:03] Perplexity Peccable: Our Health Sciences Libraries is currently made of 3 physical libraries
[10:03] Perplexity Peccable: with a single identity
[10:04] Perplexity Peccable: In this talk we'll be looking at how we got into adding another identity --
[10:04] Perplexity Peccable: our second life library, Wolverine Island Library.
[10:04] Perplexity Peccable: We are pretty new at this, and frankly aren't even sure that will be our final name. :)
[10:04] WhiteBoard (e) VWLEM: Showing Image 4/53 - HSL-VWLEM0004
[10:04] Perplexity Peccable: In real life, we offer the usual services -
[10:05] Perplexity Peccable: document delivery, circulation and reference, as well as rich print and electronic collections.
[10:05] Perplexity Peccable: This is the homepage for the website.
[10:05] Perplexity Peccable: The URL is provided at the end of the talk.
[10:05] Perplexity Peccable: For anyone who wants copies of the slides, they are available to copy in a box over by my head.
[10:05] WhiteBoard (e) VWLEM: Showing Image 5/53 - HSL-VWLEM0005
[10:05] Perplexity Peccable: Here is a bit of background about Wolverine Island
[10:06] Perplexity Peccable: The university of Michgian Medical School purchased Wolverine island in March of 2007.
[10:06] Perplexity Peccable: They then hired a professional team to design and build out the island.
[10:06] Perplexity Peccable: There were several months spent on this process!
[10:07] Perplexity Peccable: What you see here is one sketch of what the library might look like.
[10:07] Perplexity Peccable: This is from early in the process.
[10:07] Perplexity Peccable: They finally opened to our community in time for Fall term classes.
[10:07] WhiteBoard (e) VWLEM: Showing Image 6/53 - HSL-VWLEM0006
[10:07] Perplexity Peccable: Now, while all that was going on, what was the library doing?
[10:07] Perplexity Peccable: lol
[10:08] Perplexity Peccable: At the time of the purchase, our library director asked for a team of volunteers to go into Second Life and learn what we would need to know.
[10:08] Perplexity Peccable: To get ready.
[10:08] Perplexity Peccable: The initial team was pretty diverse.
[10:09] Perplexity Peccable: Some of the librarians had some unfortunate experiences that put them off the idea of SL.
[10:09] Perplexity Peccable: Some had tech problems. A LOT of them had tech problems!
[10:09] Corwin Howlett: yeah, I've been there :)
[10:09] Sheila Yoshikawa: did they have other bad experiences?
[10:09] Perplexity Peccable: We found some real challenges getting institutional support for getting the staff computers to work with SL.
[10:09] Perplexity Peccable: Yes - one of the librarians encounrtered a griefer on Orientation Island
[10:10] Perplexity Peccable: She never went back.
[10:10] Perplexity Peccable: Others simply became frustrated with how much the computer crashed.
[10:10] Perplexity Peccable: Kaiya here was exceptionally persistent in digging to the root of all her tech problems.
[10:10] Perplexity Peccable: Kaiya , do you want to say a little bit about that?
[10:11] Kaiya Qunhua: I had some strange experiences too when I first started.
[10:11] Perplexity Peccable: We can talk more about this afterwards if there is time.
[10:11] Kaiya Qunhua: But, a new video card helped with my tech problems.
[10:11] Perplexity Peccable: Yay!!
[10:11] Perplexity Peccable: We also had trouble with teleporting - more on that later.
[10:12] Perplexity Peccable: sorry - I wanted to mention that in August one of our deans said Wow!
[10:12] Perplexity Peccable: SL is really interesting!
[10:12] Perplexity Peccable: How do I convince other deans?
[10:12] Perplexity Peccable: I wish I had a video.
[10:12] Perplexity Peccable: This was in a meeting with the director of informatics.
[10:12] Perplexity Peccable: She said, oh, sure , we can do that. When do you need it?
[10:12] Perplexity Peccable: 3 days later.
[10:12] Perplexity Peccable: YIKES!!
[10:13] Perplexity Peccable: None of us had ever done machinima.
[10:13] WhiteBoard (e) VWLEM: Showing Image 7/53 - HSL-VWLEM0007
[10:13] Perplexity Peccable: But we did it!
[10:13] Perplexity Peccable: 3 days later we had a video,
[10:13] Perplexity Peccable: He went off to his meeting and showed it to the other deans.
[10:14] Perplexity Peccable: What this told me was how EMPOWERING Second Life is.
[10:14] Perplexity Peccable: That a real batch of noobs could do this just blew my mind.
[10:14] Perplexity Peccable: As of yesterday, our video had over 6 thousand views in YouTube.
[10:14] WhiteBoard (e) VWLEM: Showing Image 8/53 - HSL-VWLEM0008
[10:14] Perplexity Peccable: Life moved on.
[10:14] Perplexity Peccable: The Med School taught an elective in SL.
[10:15] Perplexity Peccable: The point was to get a cohort of students ready to work in SL for academics
[10:15] Perplexity Peccable: to ensure that they had the core skills
[10:15] Perplexity Peccable: The person shown on the slide here was the teacher of that elective.
[10:15] Perplexity Peccable: I begged prettily, and he allowed me to join them.
[10:16] Perplexity Peccable: I ended up being able to help herd students who got lost, and who asked questions,
[10:16] Perplexity Peccable: and even did a little demo of clothing tips.
[10:16] WhiteBoard (e) VWLEM: Showing Image 9/53 - HSL-VWLEM0009
[10:16] Perplexity Peccable: By December, the library - lol :) - was ready to do something.
[10:16] Perplexity Peccable: We felt a need to start community building.
[10:16] Perplexity Peccable: We decided to try a few open events
[10:17] Perplexity Peccable: Yeah - what about community, eh?
[10:17] WhiteBoard (e) VWLEM: Showing Image 10/53 - HSL-VWLEM0010
[10:17] Perplexity Peccable: Well, the brown bags have become a big part of what we do.
[10:17] Perplexity Peccable: Speakers, tours, classes, ... all kinds of events.
[10:17] Corwin Howlett: who is your target audience?
[10:17] Perplexity Peccable: We get different people every week, and a batch of repeat friends.
[10:18] WhiteBoard (e) VWLEM: Showing Image 11/53 - HSL-VWLEM0011
[10:18] Perplexity Peccable: The blog and email groups are a big part of our communication with our community.
[10:18] Amelia Teatime: brown bags in SL or RL
[10:18] Perplexity Peccable: We had real life meetings - face to face - when the bronw bags first started.
[10:18] Perplexity Peccable: None of this is new.
[10:18] Perplexity Peccable: I said earlier that we explored for several months?
[10:18] Perplexity Peccable: Wandered around and looked at what other people were doing that worked.
[10:19] Perplexity Peccable: Then we modeled our approach on other people's successes.
[10:19] WhiteBoard (e) VWLEM: Showing Image 12/53 - HSL-VWLEM0012
[10:19] Perplexity Peccable: We were asked for a wiki.
[10:19] Perplexity Peccable: The reason for this is because our SL community is different than our RL community.
[10:19] Perplexity Peccable: A much larger portion is not currently on campus.
[10:20] Perplexity Peccable: We chose wetpaint for our wiki so that our alumni and community members could more easily join us.
[10:20] Perplexity Peccable: The blog is locked down to current UM Affiliated users.
[10:20] WhiteBoard (e) VWLEM: Showing Image 13/53 - HSL-VWLEM0013
[10:20] Perplexity Peccable: but none of this has been in the library.
[10:20] Perplexity Peccable: So far, everything we've talked about has been the library staff wandering around other places.
[10:20] WhiteBoard (e) VWLEM: Showing Image 14/53 - HSL-VWLEM0014
[10:21] Perplexity Peccable: It was time for us to start moving in to our space.
[10:21] Perplexity Peccable: You remember the earlier picture of the library?
[10:21] Corwin Howlett: yes
[10:21] Perplexity Peccable: As an ivy-covered traditional building?
[10:21] Perplexity Peccable: Instead we ended up with this creative open space
[10:21] Corwin Howlett: it didn't seem real second life friendly
[10:21] Corwin Howlett: that is cool
[10:21] Perplexity Peccable: stacked rotated slabs of
[10:22] Perplexity Peccable: yes - the original space was very traditional.
[10:22] Perplexity Peccable: This looks cool,
[10:22] Corwin Howlett: open, flying friendly architecture now
[10:22] Perplexity Peccable: but presented all kinds of challenges in designing our services.
[10:22] Perplexity Peccable: Yes - open to flying
[10:22] Perplexity Peccable: and when you walk off the edge at the corner,
[10:22] Corwin Howlett: roofs are so passe
[10:22] Perplexity Peccable: you land on the floor belown
[10:22] Sheila Yoshikawa: ;-)
[10:22] Perplexity Peccable: Very clever design.
[10:22] Corwin Howlett: newbie friendly too, that is good
[10:22] Perplexity Peccable: When I first started working in it, I didn't like it.
[10:22] Sheila Yoshikawa: was that by professional designers?
[10:22] Perplexity Peccable: But I have come to really love it.
[10:23] Perplexity Peccable: Yes - professional designers
[10:23] Perplexity Peccable: This is a picture of it before we moved in.
[10:23] Perplexity Peccable: What were we going to do with four slabs ... ? Good question!
[10:23] WhiteBoard (e) VWLEM: Showing Image 15/53 - HSL-VWLEM0015
[10:23] Perplexity Peccable: Well, what do we do in RL?
[10:23] Perplexity Peccable: Circulation, reference, collections, computers ...
[10:24] WhiteBoard (e) VWLEM: Showing Image 16/53 - HSL-VWLEM0016
[10:24] Perplexity Peccable: But we didn't want to do all of those in SL.
[10:24] Perplexity Peccable: We found a lot of our main day-to-day jobs in RL just did not make sense in SL.
[10:24] WhiteBoard (e) VWLEM: Showing Image 17/53 - HSL-VWLEM0017
[10:24] Perplexity Peccable: why not?
[10:24] Perplexity Peccable: InfoIsland does reference.
[10:24] Perplexity Peccable: They have a LOT of people doing reference.
[10:25] Perplexity Peccable: Maybe we don't need to be the ones doing that.
[10:25] Perplexity Peccable: Our director especially wanted us to focus on our institution, doing things relevant to our community,
[10:25] Perplexity Peccable: and not reinventing the wheel.
[10:26] Perplexity Peccable: Info Island also has collections
[10:26] Perplexity Peccable: here is there serials room
[10:26] Perplexity Peccable: They also provide books.
[10:26] Perplexity Peccable: Another part of the question was whether or not our patrons in SL would want this from us.
[10:26] Perplexity Peccable: We don't really know for sure.
[10:26] WhiteBoard (e) VWLEM: Showing Image 18/53 - HSL-VWLEM0018
[10:27] Perplexity Peccable: Well, there are other things we do.
[10:27] Perplexity Peccable: teaching, liaison, resource guides, troublehsooting ...
[10:27] Perplexity Peccable: Those we can do in both places.
[10:27] WhiteBoard (e) VWLEM: Showing Image 19/53 - HSL-VWLEM0019
[10:27] Perplexity Peccable: But they aren't quite the same
[10:28] Perplexity Peccable: In RL, you stand at the head of the room, have a microphone, projector, all those things.
[10:28] Perplexity Peccable: In sl, you can do that, but you might not.
[10:28] WhiteBoard (e) VWLEM: Showing Image 20/53 - HSL-VWLEM0020
[10:28] Perplexity Peccable: This is from the first class I taught in SL.
[10:28] Perplexity Peccable: How to make basic clothes.
[10:29] Perplexity Peccable: Can you imagine doing this in RL?
[10:29] Corwin Howlett: ha ha
[10:29] Perplexity Peccable: Maybe in a public library, but never in a medical library.
[10:29] Perplexity Peccable: And stripping down to your underwear to teach class?
[10:29] Perplexity Peccable: Whoa!!!
[10:29] Perplexity Peccable: It was an interesting experience, I can say.
[10:29] WhiteBoard (e) VWLEM: Showing Image 21/53 - HSL-VWLEM0021
[10:29] Perplexity Peccable: Likewise the guides are going to look a little different.
[10:30] Perplexity Peccable: Making notecards was a critical skill,
[10:30] Perplexity Peccable: and learning how to embed different kinds of material in the notecards.
[10:30] Perplexity Peccable: This is the same class
[10:30] Perplexity Peccable: designed as a tutorial with screenshots.
[10:30] WhiteBoard (e) VWLEM: Showing Image 22/53 - HSL-VWLEM0022
[10:30] Perplexity Peccable: We mentioned troubleshooting earlier for our staff.
[10:31] Perplexity Peccable: All of that helps us provide assistance to our patrons.
[10:31] Perplexity Peccable: One of the issues was the security in the clinical networking environment
[10:31] Perplexity Peccable: which is very tight security
[10:31] Perplexity Peccable: because of patient records.
[10:31] Perplexity Peccable: Teleporting was a problem, we discovered
[10:31] Perplexity Peccable: because it requires that two adjacent network pipes be open at the same time.
[10:32] Perplexity Peccable: That required some special network configuration.
[10:32] Perplexity Peccable: At the end, you don't know all the answers, so asking for help?
[10:32] Perplexity Peccable: SL Mentors!!
[10:32] Perplexity Peccable: Thank God for SL Mentors. :)
[10:32] Perplexity Peccable: This is one we who helped us yesterday.
[10:32] Perplexity Peccable: Not exactly human, and he speaks French as his primary language.
[10:33] Perplexity Peccable: But the problem got solved. :)
[10:33] WhiteBoard (e) VWLEM: Showing Image 23/53 - HSL-VWLEM0023
[10:33] Perplexity Peccable: I'm going to try to move a little faster.
[10:33] Perplexity Peccable: One mention - grants.
[10:33] Perplexity Peccable: We are applying for a SL research grant, but haven't done it yet.
[10:33] Perplexity Peccable: thus the question mark. :)
[10:33] WhiteBoard (e) VWLEM: Showing Image 24/53 - HSL-VWLEM0024
[10:33] Sheila Yoshikawa: to research what?
[10:34] Perplexity Peccable: These are some of the events we've had.
[10:34] Perplexity Peccable: Research the impact of an educational innovation on a patient community.
[10:34] Perplexity Peccable: thanks for asking!
[10:34] Perplexity Peccable: Can talk more about that later.
[10:34] Perplexity Peccable: Here we show a demo of Ply2Train, a tour of Genome, games night, and invited speakers
[10:35] Perplexity Peccable: You can take a copy of the slides in the box over my head.
[10:35] WhiteBoard (e) VWLEM: Showing Image 25/53 - HSL-VWLEM0025
[10:35] Perplexity Peccable: Because we had no walls,
[10:35] Perplexity Peccable: setting up and exhibit was a challenge
[10:35] Perplexity Peccable: We decided to use vendors!
[10:36] Perplexity Peccable: We can display 60 pieces of information in the space for 2 panels.
[10:36] Perplexity Peccable: This was another unusual skill we did not expect to need to learn.
[10:36] Notecard Writer: Which vendor system did you use?
[10:36] Perplexity Peccable: Our current exhibit is pages from a rare book in our historic collections on herbal remedies in the 1800s.
[10:36] Perplexity Peccable: EataVend
[10:36] Notecard Writer: THanks
[10:36] Perplexity Peccable: :)
[10:36] WhiteBoard (e) VWLEM: Showing Image 26/53 - HSL-VWLEM0026
[10:37] Perplexity Peccable: You see the things we do in SL are ... sort of ... like what we do in RL.
[10:37] Perplexity Peccable: Now we are getting to the more unusual things.
[10:37] Perplexity Peccable: World tours?
[10:37] Perplexity Peccable: Sales? Providing resources on how to program and build?
[10:38] Perplexity Peccable: Not your typical medical library at all.
[10:38] WhiteBoard (e) VWLEM: Showing Image 27/53 - HSL-VWLEM0027
[10:38] Perplexity Peccable: A tour of InfoIsland International lead by Rolig Loon
[10:38] WhiteBoard (e) VWLEM: Showing Image 28/53 - HSL-VWLEM0028
[10:38] Perplexity Peccable: And using a vendor to sell tools
[10:39] Perplexity Peccable: Buiding tools, bald caps, all kinds of scripts and other tools.
[10:39] Perplexity Peccable: Everything is free, of course.
[10:39] WhiteBoard (e) VWLEM: Showing Image 29/53 - HSL-VWLEM0029
[10:39] Perplexity Peccable: More "sales"
[10:39] Perplexity Peccable: clothing, body parts, gestures, food ...
[10:39] Perplexity Peccable: costumes. :)
[10:39] Perplexity Peccable: that is popular.
[10:39] WhiteBoard (e) VWLEM: Showing Image 30/53 - HSL-VWLEM0030
[10:40] Perplexity Peccable: We even set up a shop for selling branded clothes for the university
[10:40] Perplexity Peccable: with the logo on it.
[10:40] Perplexity Peccable: We got formal permission and
[10:40] Perplexity Peccable: the LIBRARY is the current designated designer of offical UM sports wear for Second Life.
[10:40] Perplexity Peccable: I am shaking my head here.
[10:40] Perplexity Peccable: Have trouble believing it.
[10:41] WhiteBoard (e) VWLEM: Showing Image 31/53 - HSL-VWLEM0031
[10:41] Perplexity Peccable: Here are people picking up snacks at the food court.
[10:41] Perplexity Peccable: and a image of our patient group.
[10:41] Perplexity Peccable: This relates to the research - persons with facial difference.
[10:41] WhiteBoard (e) VWLEM: Showing Image 32/53 - HSL-VWLEM0032
[10:42] Perplexity Peccable: In real life, the biggest groups of patrons are the faculty and studenets
[10:42] Perplexity Peccable: the blue wedge is faculty
[10:42] Perplexity Peccable: and the red wedge is students.
[10:42] Perplexity Peccable: Staff, alumni, and community are groups we serve,
[10:42] Perplexity Peccable: but we don't tend to see them as much.
[10:43] Notecard Writer: You don't seem to get a lot oif outside users
[10:43] Perplexity Peccable: I want you to have this in mind when we shift to the proportions for our SL commnity
[10:43] Notecard Writer: Oh sorry nm that was REAL life LOL
[10:43] Perplexity Peccable: we have some on weekend, but it really is a small part of our use.
[10:43] Perplexity Peccable: Yes - this is RL.
[10:43] Perplexity Peccable: Now, for SL.
[10:43] WhiteBoard (e) VWLEM: Showing Image 33/53 - HSL-VWLEM0033
[10:43] Perplexity Peccable: TOTALLY different
[10:43] Perplexity Peccable: Not very many students yet,
[10:44] Perplexity Peccable: not very many classes in SL right now.
[10:44] Perplexity Peccable: mostly faculty and alumni.
[10:44] Perplexity Peccable: We have even more community than students right now.
[10:44] Notecard Writer: still rezzing
[10:44] Perplexity Peccable: The surprise was alumni.
[10:44] Perplexity Peccable: Perhaps it should not have been a surprise, but it was.
[10:44] Perplexity Peccable: The blue wedge is faculty
[10:44] Corwin Howlett: Perplexity I am being called away to help out elsewhere. If you have any problems, just IM me and I will TP right back. Can you save a copy of the chat log for our records, and perhaps put it in a notecard or email it to me?
[10:44] Perplexity Peccable: and the green wedge is the alumni.
[10:45] WhiteBoard (e) VWLEM: Showing Image 34/53 - HSL-VWLEM0034
[10:45] Perplexity Peccable: Our SL staff are still volunteers
[10:45] Perplexity Peccable: from all three libraries
[10:45] Perplexity Peccable: and two of our staff teams.
[10:45] Notecard Writer: I'm still surprised by how little comunity use you have
[10:45] Perplexity Peccable: They are mostly reference staff and librarians who work with faculty - the liaison.
[10:45] Notecard Writer: in the SL
[10:45] Perplexity Peccable: Notecard, those are not hard stats
[10:46] Perplexity Peccable: It is my impressions.
[10:46] Notecard Writer: Don't you get avatars wandering in from everywhere?
[10:46] Perplexity Peccable: And that was for one of the libraries,
[10:46] Perplexity Peccable: not all three.
[10:46] Notecard Writer: Like at the Info Island Reference Desk
[10:46] Notecard Writer: oh OK
[10:46] Perplexity Peccable: Well, Wolverine is locked down.
[10:46] Perplexity Peccable: Wolverine is not open to the public
[10:46] Perplexity Peccable: To get in, you have to ask permission, know who to ask, and join the right group.
[10:46] Notecard Writer: Oh that's why then, restricted access. Makes sense
[10:47] Perplexity Peccable: I should say, be INVITED to join.
[10:47] Perplexity Peccable: I am hoping that we can open the library to the public
[10:47] Perplexity Peccable: so folks can come to our exhibit. :)
[10:47] WhiteBoard (e) VWLEM: Showing Image 35/53 - HSL-VWLEM0035
[10:47] Perplexity Peccable: Kaiya,
[10:47] Perplexity Peccable: would you like to talk about the library layout?
[10:48] Kaiya Qunhua: The ground floor has freebies and seating.
[10:48] WhiteBoard (e) VWLEM: Showing Image 36/53 - HSL-VWLEM0036
[10:48] Kaiya Qunhua: The main floor is the welcome area.
[10:48] WhiteBoard (e) VWLEM: Showing Image 37/53 - HSL-VWLEM0037
[10:48] Kaiya Qunhua: The mezzanine has our exhibits.
[10:48] WhiteBoard (e) VWLEM: Showing Image 38/53 - HSL-VWLEM0038
[10:48] Kaiya Qunhua: And the roof has whiteboards, seating, and a dance floor.
[10:48] WhiteBoard (e) VWLEM: Showing Image 39/53 - HSL-VWLEM0039
[10:49] Perplexity Peccable: A quick comment about the dancefloor
[10:49] Perplexity Peccable: To engage our community, the dancefloors were modded to use medical images
[10:49] Perplexity Peccable: histology and microscope images.
[10:49] WhiteBoard (e) VWLEM: Showing Image 40/53 - HSL-VWLEM0040
[10:50] Perplexity Peccable: We had to learn a lot of surprising skils.
[10:50] Perplexity Peccable: One odd request was to get an skeleton avatar and a muscle skin and be a model for kinesiology people.
[10:50] Perplexity Peccable: Makes sense afterwards, but was not something to predict.
