"If you had five minutes to talk with President Obama about educational technology, what would you say?"

The federal government of the United States of America has assembled an 18 person team to update and revise the National Education Technology Plan. Their draft report deadline is November 11, 2009, with the final report to be delivered in early 2010. There will be a Public Forum in Second Life for educational technology stakeholders to provide input into the planning process. A representative of the national team is planning to be present as an observer at the SL event.

The event coordinator is Perplexity Peccable (RL: Patricia F. Anderson). Perplexity is the University of Michigan Emerging Technologies Librarian for the Health Sciences, and the community manager for Wolverine Island in SL. - Search for the avatar name using the Search button at the bottom of the browser.

World Music

Sheri Jefes (Sheri Jaffurs) teaches at University of Michigan-Flint and the Farmington Public School District. Farmington Public School has sponsored SIMphonic Island on the teen grid where Dr. Jaffurs will be teaching a high school music technology course. Presently, she is teaching an online course she developed, “World Music", an overview of multicultural music in the K-12 classroom. The course is an examination of the cultural context of selected music cultures and is offered online at University of Michigan-Flint which meets on Second Life’s Wolverine Island every Wednesday at 4PM EST or 1PM SLT.

"World Music for the Music Educator" is open to all music education majors.The course meets INworld on Second Life's Wolverine Island and explores other cultures of the Metaverse. Our hope is that to understand and discover the meanings and cultures of others we may better understand our own culture and appreciate the richness of culture worldwide.

Jaffurs also teaches courses in early childhood and elementary music education and is the liaison for Second Life at University of Michigan-Flint. She has presented at international, national, and state conferences on the development of musicality and transmission of learning in informal and formal settings. Her “Lessons from a Garageband: Informal Venues for Music Making” was based on a three year study about popular musicians. She is also an instructor for the high school course, “Creating Music on SIMPhonic Island” on Second Life’s Teen Grid.

This space in the site is for various people and communities within the University of Michigan Second Life community to highlight their activities, offerings, resources, classes, and more.

Presentation Basics

Do you have copies of the whiteboards from AngryBeth? We recommend those for people new to presenting in SL. We regularly have sessions for new faculty to help them go get their own copies. These are available at AngryBeth's CyberGrrl store, on the porch outside in front, selling for $5L.

You can practice on the Wolverine library roof copies, whichare unlocked. Instructions are in the whiteboards.

Basic idea is this:
- Make a powerpoint (PPT) or equivalent. Use lots of pictures, a few graphs or charts, few words.
- Save the file to HTML.
- Convert the GIF images to targa (TGA).
- Name the image files so they'll be easily findable in SL inventory, and you can distinguish from other presentation image files.
- Number them in sequence for how they should be viewed.
- In the SL browser, under FILE, choose Upload Image or Batch Image Upload.NOTE: uploading images costs money - $10L each.
- Find the images in your inventory. They should be in your Textures folder.
- At the whiteboard projector, you are now ready to add the images. Hold down the CTRL key while you drag them onto the whiteboard projector. You should see a message in Local Chat saying that the images have been added.
- Test the display to make sure it is what you wanted.
- If it looks good, and you are using your own whiteboard, you can then EDIT the name of the whiteboard to something like My BLANKPresentation and TAKE a copy of the whiteboard.
- When you are ready to present, you can drag the whiteboard out of yourinventory, and voila! all set up, ready to go.

- Remember to secure the whiteboard when you present by clicking the LOCK button. Otherwise people trying to get the image textures to load may click on the whiteboard and force the slides forward when you aren't ready for it to happen.

Write out a script beforehand. You can give people copies, you cancut and paste into chat - it saves you time typing, especially ifthere is lag. Plan to not change slides very often - the slides don't havetime to rez and many people may have trouble seeing them if you go fast.

One thing that you can do is make a box with the script and thetextures for the slides, set it out by the screen, and set it to givepeople a folder of contents. This allows people to preload the slidetextures so they can see what I'm talking about as I get there.

There are lots of other tools to help with this, but for a first time,these are the basics for success. :)

Set Home to Wolverine

There are many advantages to having Wolverine serve as your Second Life home. Among these is having a safe place to go, and easy access to the Wolverine events and resources without hunting for a landmark.

To set home to Wolverine Island, you must be affiliated with the University of Michigan and be a member of our SL group, Wolverine-Community.

Setting Home:

Stand directly on the 'M' in the center of the welcome center (it only works there).
Open the World menu at the top of your SL window.
Choose 'Set Home to Here'.
A little popup box will appear in the lower right of your SL window stating 'Home position set'.

Let us know if you encounter any problems.
